I generally always keep the fish reveal off.
I would rather do the thinking for myself, than letting the depth finder think for me and mininterpret the readings.

Take care

p.s.
A bit of practice will really help you to id the bottom, type, structure, fish, bait fish etc.

With fish id or fish reveal turned on, a fish symbol will often be painted on moss, 'stuff in the water" that is not fish.

Hey thanks REW just a closed season boardum question....soon to end. I always use the unit in manual!! I didn't relize that fish I.D. was "cartoon" fish as I call them. Much better to use manual zoom, and as you said, interpit. thanks

Dave,
I apologize, I jumped to the incorrect conclusion>
The following quote is from the Lowrance web site:
---
"FishReveal™
When viewing actual sonar returns, the unique FishReveal™ feature is what you need to expose fish targets hiding in underwater cover -- like surface clutter, thermoclines, and weed beds -- with 10 levels of gray tones that are adjustable for the most revealing look in virtually any underwater environment."

--

From their description, I believe that essentially FishReveal, is dealing with painting the area that is close to the bottom in different levels of gray - for mono, or different colors for color units. This Lowrance unique shading, would allow a sonar return from a fish, to be more easily distinguished from a weed.

As you may read from the first sentence:
"When viewing actual sonar returns, "
So, this is NOT looking at fish ID or cartoon fish.

It sounds like a great feature, and I am sorry that I mislead you.

Take care
REW

I have a new 323c color and used it for the 1st time on the Missouri River in Chamberlain. It was great. The Reveal feature really does show the fish on the bottom and you could even distinguish the difference between the fish and the rocks it was next to. I'll never go back to a mono. I could not distinguish this on my mono on the bow. I will be replacing that mono too as soon as I can. The GPS screens are great too. Can't wait to try out the Lakemaster chip on Mille Lacs next weekend.

Good Luck!
