I spooled four reels this spring with power pro 30# test line wanting to give it a try. So far I have had two break offs, both with heavy fish on spoons behind in-line boards. My 20# leader did not break but the line did. Has anyone else experienced a problem? I may have got hold of a bad spool but as of now I am ready to scrap it.

Dean,
What type of knot are you using to your swivel/snap? Is it possible your knot failed/slipped?
I have used the 20lb/8lb diameter over the past two seasons and haven't had any problems, including the two salmon trips to manistee. I do run soft dipsey rods and a light drag.
Give Den a call, he knows quite few guys running the stuff and might also have heard about some failures.

My initial thought is you may have a line wearing against a bad guide, or maybe when storing the rod, it is laying against a sharp edge. I know PP is tough and durable and this should not happen......maybe a bad spool. I run lots of PP, but not that high up in test...no problems and I have LOTS of use.
Call PP and talk with them, they may well exchange the spool for you at some pro-rated expense.

Check for a cracked line guide. One time I lost two dipsy rigs in the same day, thought the first one was a fluke but the second one got me hunting for the cause. That's the only failure I can recall in the last four years using 30/8 PP.
Use a palomar knot to tie on your snap or swivel. Over time the line will fray near the knot so you'll need to retie that connection every so often.
Another cause of failure is when large carp hit a dipsey rig. This will overstress even 8/30 line if no snubber is used. ;-)

The break offs come on two different poles, I use palmer knots on everything. Its got me worried, I have a dozen outfits but only put the power pro on three poles and have had line breaks on two of them. The last one was a hog sheephead I suspect, we had just taken two off and this one hit and the board was coming in toward center in a hurry, the line broke and I expected it to be my 17# leader but it was the line.

I have had some suspect break-offs with PP as well.
I fish in tree infested water, with PP I learned not to "snap" the line when trying to free it from a tree, rather exert steady pressure. When snapping the line to jolt the snag loose, the PP seemed to break too easily.
In cold water, the PP also seemed to break too easily. When using PP in November / Canada, I was floored by how easy my line was breaking.
When I have a break-off with PP, it seems like it can be anywhere in the line from at the reel to the knot. Usually it does not break at the knot. That would indicate the knot strength to be very good, but it also means you loose more line and soon do not have enough left on the reel, so respool.
I like the PP thin diameter. I'll use the PP I have, but probably be more likely to buy fireline in the future. I may have gotten a bad batch of line - one possibility. I have pretty much just been quiet about my experience with PP, watching this board to see if anyone else had similar experiences.
You asked, I have had similar experience, JMO.

Hey Dean Kevin from Cleveland here I have had the same line on my great lakes 47 dipsey rods for two years now and NEVER had a breakoff exept when I ran into some nets off lorain and couldn't pull them in time, but that was at the knot. I love it must have had a bad spool. The only thing I noticed is that the lines color changes but that is just from alot of use and sun. I like it alot better than fireline that's for sure.

I use power pro of every line test after June. I can tell you that in my experience, the line in the 20-30 category is very sensitive to sharp hook sets. I tried using 30 to flip jigs in milfoil and had the same results as you are having. If you were using this line in a trolling application I do not think you would have a problem. Slow long hooksets are fine.
There is not enough cushion in the line to dampen a hard hookset. I now use 50 in the same applications and up to 80 when muskie fishing and I do not think there is a better line.
By the way I use 10 and 15 in spining applications and it to is spectacular.

I bought mine in January, put it on in April and the color is still bright. It looks like new line but for the two breaks.

Dean, I and most of my friends are using 30/8 on dipsy and board rods and I haven't heard of any problems. We have popped a lot of dipsies with the PP and have never had a breakoff?? Some of the rods are on their 3rd season.

Dean, I used the 20/6# stuff for a couple of years and had 1 dipsy break off on me when an overzealous passenger tried to set the hook. I since have skipped over the 30 and went with the 50 for my dipsy's and have had no more problems.

Dean,
I've used PP 30/8 for three or 4 years and never experienced any problems. this year i upgraded to the new 40/10 to better match info in Precision Trolling. So far its been great too. Maybe you can contact the manufacturer and get some new line.
good luck.

In addition to speaking to PP, as I had suggested, here is another thought. MAYBE, the spool you have is mis-marked in comparison to the line you thought you bought. It may be significantly lower in test, thus breaking so much easier.
I would still call PP and talk exchange. Heck maybe they are just as interested in the line, as you are to resolve. MW

IT seems all of these posts support my statement. Power pro in the 20 - 30 lb test range is a fine trolling line, just do not use it to fish muskies pike or larger mouth if sharp hooksets are required.

I use 30# power pro on my pike and catfish rods, lotw pike up to 46 inches and red river cats pushing thirty pounds. Sturdy hooksets and no lines breaking for me.

When a small eye hits a spoon on a dipsey and and doesn't release the dipsy and someone grabs the rod and snaps it to release the dipsey, that's a pretty sharp blow!

LOL One of the biggest things/mistakes SOME people do is SET the hook that's already set when trolling. To much bass fishing on TV. Just pick it up a reel. This is for those that don't already know that.
If I agree with you, then we'd both be wrong.

I use the 50/12 Power Pro and never had an problem....other than fishing success in the spring. When the water is colder I've found mono gets more bites than Power Pro, probably because you get a more aggressive wobble with Power Pro using crank baits. I was thinking of using the 30/8 Power Pro for trolling, but based on some of the comments above I think I will stick with 50/12. I've used the 50/12 line for steelhead the last three years, and it never broke.
