I have used 14 LB Stren Fluorocarbon leaders with decent success to cut down on pike bite offs by about 90%, fishing for walleye and smallmouth primarily. Is Fireline, Cabela's Ripcord Si or other superlines any better than that?
Thanks,
Don

Titanium leaders are bullet proof.
Take care

What kind of knot are you using to connect your leader and main line? Back-to-back uni-knots or something else?
Thanks!

The biggest advantage you have using fluorocarbon leaders is that the leader is "invisible" to the fish. You will not have that advantage with fireline, or any of the super braids. They are more visible then mono.

I have been impressed with the braided lines and resistance to bite-offs. When fishing for fincky fish, though, I would still use a fluorocarbon or mono leader.

Waconia Guy,
I tie a barrel swivel on the mono (6 or 8 pound stren gold hi-vis) and then a 12-14 inch fluorocarbon leader.

Braided all the way! Cross my heart, I've NEVER had a bite-off using 30# Stealth for pike fishing since it has been available. Landed pike near 40", fought 40+, but the lures failed before the line. Even a big 'ole 43" muskie in the boat. Never used a leader since I gave up mono. Definitely not saying it can't happen, but I'm batting a thousand with it out of probably around 200 pike and a few muskie.

Thanks for the info; we usually use back-to-back knots of some kind but we have also used swivels instead.

Try some Tyger leader. It comes in smaller waits andyou can tie it or fuse it. Great stuff.
