Easy question for you experienced walleye guys and gals. What's the most effective way to rig your nightcrawler to a jig? Do you feel the new "baits" can give similar results (Gulp, Powerbait etc.)? Never tried crawler harnesses, but I assume they are fairly stroight forward to rig??

Thanks for the help,

My fishing buddy has used worm harnesses for years. I always used various crank baits or stick (minnow) baits.

In early / mid July, at the Buffalo end of Lake Erie, it became evident that all the walleyes wanted were worm harnesses, usually with copper or gold blade(s). So I began using crawler harnesses, along with my buddy.

One Saturday, he caught 3 nice walleyes (and 4 sheephead) on harnesses with real nightcrawlers. I got zero fish, on harnesses with Gulp nightcrawlers.

The next Saturday, he caught zero fish (harnesses with real nightcrawlers), and I caught a 27" and a 28.5" walleye on a harness with Gulp (black w/ red fleck) nightcrawlers.

So, to answer your question, our experience is pretty much split, real vs. Gulp crawlers. I prefer the "no maintenance / no mess" Gulp
crawlers, where my buddy buys (and keeps in his fridge) real worms.

Good luck.

I rig mine straight along the hooks ,i generallly get mine thru the head and slide it on up the shank, and then hook it so it's very straight on the rest of the hooks...and use a great big wiggly crawler for lots of action.
