My oldest will be heading off to school at MTU soon. He will be taking a 17 ft sea nymph to explore the areas fishing. What type of fishing will he encounter. We normally fish for Salmon and Walleye. He spent the last two summers on the back of a walleye charter boat in Lake Erie to pay for the boat.Any body with local info willing to share will be appreciated.Thank you. Rick H

Rick,
I live in the da U.P.; but don't live where your son's going to college (MTU). I have two U.P. websites your son could use for fishing help while he's at Houghton: WWW.UPWOODSNWATER.COM & www.UpperMichigan-Sportsman. Hope this information is helpfull. Good fishing to you & your son. Jeff
i have a son at mtu also, a senior this year. portage lake and torch lake(which is connected) are both excellent walleye lakes. the pwt ran their championship there in 2003 and 2004. a little searching should give you the stories on those tournaments.
when we lose the 2nd. amendment the others will be history too!

He will be able to find any kind of fishing he desires in the U.P. You also should probably equip him with some ice fishing stuff since it comes early and leaves late up there. Probably get more ice time than open water time during a normal school year. Ice will start forming in late Nov.- early Dec. and stay until at least Mid. April. His best bet will be to check with local sport shops to find best locations to start and then search out after that.
P.S. Warn him not to try to drink the U.P.'ers under the table. Even the little guys grow up with beer in their bottles.

Then you know a little bit about the snow up there too! Hope he enjoys his years up there and learns a thing or two. My son graduated this year too. I can't imagine him drinking either, but I'm not going to be shocked if/when he does. Hope they do it smarter than we did when we were growing up. Whoever heard of a designated driver? All we ever had was designated drunk driver's. Least drunk on their butt was driving. Things sure have changed since the "good old days".
st is right on about the ice fishing and close on the drinking. the boys away from home hold their own. jim's supermarket, accross the street from mtu, isn't the biggest package liquor dealer in the state for nothing.

I have lived in this area and on Portage Lake for more than 20 years. There is no lack of fishing opportunities for both warm and cold water species. In fact there is good shore fishing right at the campus. He should approach Portage like any inland lake. Open water trolling is also productive at times.
Your son has made an excellent choice for a college and MTU is noted for being a "best value". He is going to find out however, that there will be limited time for fishing. They work those kids pretty hard. I also believe there is limited parking, where is he going to store the boat?
Come early November, the snow can arrive any day and most open water fishing ends. Ice fishing is dependant on weather, but generally first (safe) ice fishing begins around mid to late December.

I grew up in the area and graduated from MTU. He should get aquainted with the folks at Superior Bait & Tackle, about 1/2 way between Chassell and Houghton. There are a lot of interesting waters in the western U.P. and he should really enjoy exploring. The Portage system has a lot to offer, and places like Gogebic and Michigamme Reservoir aren't really all that far away.

I have a storage unit rented to keep the boat in. The plan is to bring it home at Thansgiving then back up in late april. He has great study habits but I am sure he will find time for some recreation.Keep your eyes open for the 17ft sea nymph (blue) with 45hp mariner.Say Hi to Matt( aka Tacklemaster)He is an avid skier so that will keep him busy during the hard water months. We have never done much ice fishing but now may be the time to start learning. Thanks Rick H.

sounds like he is all set then with the storage. Tell him to get the Keweenaw Waterway chart, it will help a lot. I will keep an eye out for him on the water this fall.

Sorry for the delay in replying but it was take the kid to school weekend! We rented a storage locker for the boat . It is not the easiest to get backed into. If you know of a garage for rent let me know. Rick H
