View Full Version : Walleye
I know this is going to be a very stupid question to expert fisherman. But we are having a little debate here in Toledo, Ohio.
The question is:
Is there a difference between Walleye and Pickeral?
Would really like a serious answer and the difference between the fish, if there is one.
Thanks a million..I need to win this bet!!!

Bev - Differant name for the same species in Your neck of the woods. There is indeed a fish named "Chained Pickeral", but in the Great Lakes/Canadian area Pickeral is another name for a Walleye. Bob WC#253 PS - Who won the bet :) ?
I lost the bet :( Thanks for your prompt answer, now I have to get
out my checkbook! Happy Fishing!!
My understanding is the Pickeral is a "Pike" family fish. The Walleye is acctually part of the "Perch" family. Pike/Pickeral are un-related.
I guess that is true, they do call the Pickeral a Walleye in some parts, but an acctually pickeral is part of the "Pike" family.
Ok....one more time, they Call the Walleye a Pickeral up North... not visa versa like I said. But I do stand by the Walleye not being related to an acctual Pike/Pickeral.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
There are several Head Lakes in the province of Ontario:
The Head Lake in the Kawartha Lakes region is located between Uphill (to the west) and Norland (to the east) along Kawartha road 45 (formerly highway 503). The community of Head Lake is located on this lake. This is an excellent lake to fish for bass and pickerel (sometimes called walleye). The lake is about 3 miles wide and 5 miles long. It is drained by the Head River which flows into the Black River to empty into Lake Couchiching.
The Head Lake in Haliburton County is located near the village of Haliburton.
Looks like it is common in some areas of Ontario. Other names include yellow pike & pike perch.
