i have a question on sonar marking fish.
i use a garmin 240.
question is, if you are in 30ft.of water on a smooth bottom setting still and showing no fish then one moves in it will show it on screen. now if that same fish continues to stay in the cone but moves around will it continue to show 1 fish or will i think i found the mother lode?
is there a way to tell the difference besides catching it and all fish are gone?
tight lines

i cant answer as to what the garmin will show, but when i anchor using my lowrance, if a single fish comes into view, it will usually be a long straight line on the screen, usually mutiple fish will show mutlple lines. one way you can test this, is to anchor and drop a jig straight down below the transducer and see what it does.

On a good sonar, if you are anchored and the fish is moving below you then you should see a continuous line one the screen, indicating multiple returns from the same fish as it moves through the water column. The line should display at a greater range as the fish moves away from you, making it appear that the fish went deeper, although not necessarily so. You really have to visualize what the sonar is doing and remember that sonar measures "range" not "depth".
On the other hand, if you are moving and the fish is stationary, that's when you should see archs, or semi-archs on your screen.
