Have a new Abu 2005LP which has a capacity of 140/12 (which I assume is mono). I'm looking at loading Power Pro 20#. What is a good rule (reel?) of thumb for estimating how many yds of Powr Pro I will need?

thx Bobby

Check to see what the Power Pro diameter is equal to....Example 10 is equal to 2 mono in dia.....I believe 20 is equal to 6 mono.

So that would tell me I would need ???/6 to equate to 140/12. I doubt it is stictly linear so that 280/6 would be equivalent to 140/12 but then I don't know!

Hmmm....maybe answered my own question...according to PowerPro:
"For calculation, you can assume that the relationship between test and volume of monofilament are linear - this means that if a reel can hold 100 Yards of 20 lb Mono, it will be able to hold 200 yards of 10 lb mono. (10 lb mono will take half the volume of 20 lb. Mono.)"
so it IS linear. Grabbing my calculator out of my tackle box it tells me 197/20 PP = 140/12 mono. Off to the tackle shop to find me a 197 yd spool of 20# PP.

You could always put some backing of mono on first. This way you don't waste all that power pro.

Good idea - the backing. Use some 20# test mono. (since the rest will be 20# test Power Pro). Tie back-to-back "Uni" knots to join the two lines.
I've always heard that it is a good idea to have some regular mono line on the reel first, before finishing off with super line.
I believe Power Pro comes in 150 yd. & 300 Yd. spools.

The spectra lines tend to slip on the spools so it is always a good idea to back with mono or to use a medical tape...I forget the name of this stuff, but it sticks to itself and won't leave a residue but provides a good base on the spool for the spectra lines to bite into. If I think of the name of this stuff, I'll post it up. Some guys use normal medical tape or electrical tape but that is asking for trouble since it gets all nasty when it gets heated up and leaves a residue.

I think I will do that, add some backing. The Abu 2005LP has a wiffle spool so slippage isn't an issue but it would be nice to get two change outs from a 150 yd spool. It will be a dedicated bottom bouncer set up and 75 yds should be more than enuf'. Thanks...
