I have fireline on some of my trolling reels that has been on them for five years , how often do you guys change this ? Does it ever go bad ?

If I were you I would change line. I know it lasts longer than mono. But I change that every year and sometimes more often. I would say 2 maybe 3 years on the super lines.

That is along time for line to be on the reels. Have you ever reversed the line on the reels? If not maybe you can get 5 more years on em if you do. LOL. Good luck. Love my fireline.

I put 3 years on my Fireline until I reversed the line this Winter. I expect another 3 years out of it. All I can say otherwise is just test line/knot strength before you use it and should be a good indication.

To check mono simply tie an overhand knot, pull and check breakage. A new mono will require more tension to break than most older lines of same type. I don't think this works with Fireline well.

I've used it that long. Condition of the line and conditions fished are more critical than age. Examine it for any damaged areas and frays. If you are using inline boards examine the area where the releases attach. A good hint I got here when using inlines was to trim a short length 1-2' every so often this will get rid of any wear at the lure end and also change the location of where you hook the board on.

The disparaging remarks about Fireline seem to show that you had a bad experience with it..After a short time getting used to it's unusual qualities,(knots ,lost fish at the boat),I wouldn't go back to wire line for anything. It's the best thing for getting deep with the least amount of line out that I can imagine.I pull bottom bouncers and three ways and I can always tell whats happening below much better than mono.Mono gives a mushy feel at best and sometimes I let out too much line out and the bouncer falls over and drags. Not so with fireline. It's expensive but well worth it in my book and I'm pretty cheap.. Better luck or better skill I should say.Glen.

I would look at the line see if it is comming apart or showing wear! 5 years seems tobe a lot time but you never know!

5 years is a long time, you got your moneys worth and then some. Time to respool. If you want to try something new, give powerpro a try, it will also last you several years.

I change it every year. For me, after a year it comes apart and it snaps really easy. However, I probably troll a lot more than most people, so I would say 2 years MAX.

I think it depends more on the condition of the line than anything else. I used 20 lb. test for a couple years and then added 30 lb. test to top off the reels after they had gotten low on line. I used that for the last three years. It was great stuff. If I hadn't lost most if it off two separate rods to pleasure boaters it would still be in use this year. I'm going back to mono just to see how much I miss the Fireline. Anticipate Fireline will be back on ny reels by July when we start open water trolling more often. If you are using the smaller line tests, you can easily tell if you need to respool. Is the line fraying? If not then it's still good to go. I have seen friends spooled with the light stuff wear theirs out much quicker just from abrasions and wear and tear from board releases. Pull out 150 ft. and see what the line looks like and you'll have your answer.

My thoughts are don't mess with the extra 2 feet of mono. You loose some of the feel that the fireline gives you, and I hate tying anymore knots than i have to. The only time I use a Mono/Fluorocarbon Vanish leader is on live bait rigs. I always tie jigs directly to the fireline, black or green, I haven't found that the color matters a bit, and yes it works well on spinning reels. I like a rod with a soft tip though, you need some give somewhere.

I agree. You don't need an extra knot to fail or re-tie. Fireline works great on spinning reels. Remember too, loosen the drag a little bit looser than you would for mono. No stretch means you have already set the hook as soon as the rod gets snapped in the slightest upward movement. Let the drag and rod work for you.
