I am still strugling with the AP versus Maxxum issue.

I was just thinking about the reconditioned AP units from Cabela's. Why are there so many reconditioned units? In fact, these are listed in a recent sales catalog from Cabela's.

Any ideas why there are so many AP reconditioned units? But there do not seem to be any Maxxum reconditioned units. Can I extrapulate this information and concluded that APs are less reliable?

It just seems curious to me that there are so many reconditioned AP units.

I understand that they are backordered now, but even that is different than discontinued. Cabela's expects to get more of them.

Cant really answer you on that one. Companies recondition units for all kinds of reasons. I have bought many reconditioned products over the years and never had a problem

Could be there was something minor wrong in a production run that was easily fixable, so they didnt see a need to scrap all those units.
Maybe another brands units that come back for warranty are so bad they dont want to spend the money fixing them and putting another warranty on them, or whos company policy is not to recondition them as not to take away from sales of new units, who knows?

Just a few thoughts. I bought the recond unit, looks new has a 1 year warranty. I can live with that.

Actually, the recond units might be better anyway. They have already been shaken down, a technician has gone through them. Not like it just rolled off the line.

Alot of times with factory recondition motors they were also motors that people returned because they did not like them just wanted to use them for a weekend and get there money back or maybe a mechanical problem. Then that can't sell them for new so the factory calls them recondition motors. I sell for a power equipment company part time and have done it for years and when were received some factory recondition models that had not even been started. They were sent to the peoples house and they did not take delivery so they were sent back and now labled factory recocdition. Some of these motors might be new or maybe had a minor repair so I knowing what I know to would have no problem buying a Minn-Kota recondition motor.

I am not concerned about buying the reconditioned model. I agree that the reconditioned model is likely just fine.

My point is why are there reconditioned models for the AP and not for the Maxxum? And why are there such numbers for the AP, that Cabela's can list them in a sale catalog -- more than just putting them on the Basement section of the web. To go to print with the item, means (I think) that there are quite a few reconditioned APs.

There is an underlying explanation.

For instance, perhaps there was (is) more problems with the AP then with the Maxxum. Or, more people try the AP and then change their minds. Or the APs are not selling so well, so they list the extras as reconditioned. I really do not know the answer. I just think that it is curious.

Rick-
I see what you are saying now.

We probably will never know.

I have done my homework on this unit, it seems to be fine, they have made some improvements from the previous model.

Wait another month and I can take you for a spin with mine and we can see how it does!!:)

You know I will for sure post any problems to the gang here.

I can't speak for the rest of the folks who purchased the reconditioned units, but the one I received has never seen the water.

I emailed Minn Kota and found out the CABELAS version Auto Pilot 60 is the same as the Minn Kota AutoPilot 65. Both produce 65 pounds of thrust and the Cabelas Model is underrated for sales reasons. It is also $50 bucks cheaper. Universal sonar is not available on the Cabelas Version.
