i have just gotten into tying my own snells/spinners. what hooks are you using? and where is the best place to order in a reasonable quantity (25-50 hooks)? i tried using the cheaper hooks, but none passed the ol' "fingernail test" i can't have dull hooks. Soooo, where are the cheapest "sharp" hooks. i was looking at jan's netcraft but i guess i would like to get an opinion from the master snell men first. also, what about blades and beads? prices?
thanks guys

Hey Ryan, try checking with Tackle-Craft in Chippewa Falls, WI. I've been dealing with them for many years and have found that they have good stuff at a reasonable price. email at: tacklecr@aol.com and I'm sure thay will send a catalog. Good Luck!
Check out the craft stores for beads. VMC make a good hook for a reasonable price.

VMC is partners somehow with Rapala,Dont quite understand if they have a private line for them or what, not that it matters because If you compare VMC with gamakatsu the VMC is at best a close second.

Read a post earlier that said Rapala bought VMC to make hooks exlcuively for Rapala and that ReefRunner will be running the laser sharpened eagle claw trebles. However for snells I agree with you about the gamat (can't spell it so I won't try) hooks but I think owner and eagle claw and if you can find them mustad make some very excellent hooks for sharpness and strength versus cost. As for you Ryan buy small packs of various hooks and find some you like then go cheap. I hear ya on cost being even younger then you and having to pinch pennies wherever possible and thats what I found worked best for me. I regretablly ended up liking most of the hooks I tried so I buy whichever kind I find cheap but I always use gamats as a trailer. Best hooks ever.
gam's are a great hoook, but for half the price (or so) my cash goes to mustads and VMC. are these inferior, not realy, they are better than most by far, and a better bang for the buck~~~~~~and overall more than adequate and they'l put fish in the boat.

I most often use gamakatsu hooks for snells, but I usually buy them on sale. If I can't find them on sale somewhere, I'm perfectly happy with VMC or Mustads as well.

I just started tying my own spinners/snells as well. I like the #2 VMC hooks for the 2-hook rigs that I've made. I can find them locally for about $3 for 15 hooks. I've also used some Mustad hooks, but they had a "live bait" barb on the shank - I think that can nick your line, so I'm not using those anymore. Now that I know the size and style of hook I prefer, I'll try to shop the big catalogs for price/quantity.
