On jigging rod in Winter, what can I put on my line so ice doesn't build or line get stiff- using Fireline?

As much as I love fireline - it isn't ideal for ice fishing - first it is opaque, second the ice buildup on the guides will tear it to shreds, as you say the ice droplets stick to it and make it stiff, then when it gets on your reel it freezes the line to itself - ice fishing is one of the few applications where I believe mono is still superior. This would change if you were inside a shack and could keep the temps up... but the opaque nature of the fireline is a still a hinderance in the winter - have to use a flouro leader so you don't spook fish in the clear water. I find that mono works much better in winter also. It doesn't soak up water and stick to itself so much on the spool requiring you to pull line out by hand even when treated with reel magic or other silicone treatment.

You can try silicone such as Reel Magic.

Hey, where can you find this stuff anymore? Not in Cabelas or Bass Pro anymore. Is there anyplace on-line that you know of? I love using this stuff when casting alot to improve distance and smoothness.

I was Franks in Linwood and they had some kind of line antifreeze. It came in a small tin and looked like some type of wax.

Well thank you very kindly sir. I could not find that in the catalog and I tried to do a search on the website and had no luck. Love that stuff...I was just a few squirts from being out.

Berkley, according to their web site, makes Trilene Micro Ice and Fireline Micro Ice just for ice fishing. It might be worth a try.

I have been using the fireline micro ice for the past couple of years and I like it for most part except for the ocassional ball up it tends to do it does not get the pig tail curl that mono line will get over time.
