Yes I got a 987c this season, love it but have to say I didn't get to use it many hours due to being very busy. I'm sure I have much to learn about the unit. I'm sure MexicoNM will be giving you some and much better information soon.

For 2005, I used a 987C SI (side imaging) & a Matrix 97 side by side on the console. The 987 was mainly utilized for GPS & side imaging & back-up sonar. The 97 was mainly utilized for sonar & back-up GPS. I could swap the 97 between the console & bow on a MinnKota Maxxum Pro 80 with universal transducer. Both units performed excellent as far as ease of operation, resolution, color, side imaging, etc. For 2006, I am using a 987C SI & 937C (instead of the 97). I like the 7-inch screen vs. the 5.6-inch screen of the 97 (getting older ya know). Good luck on your choice!

I used the Matrix 87 with the quad beam transducer and the 937C with a dual beam transducer last year. I was very happy with both. Humminbird came up with a software upgrade a few weeks ago and it now, among other things which I cannot remember or didn't notice, shows feet and temp in tenths. I upgraded from Lowrance X85 and LMS160 units so it was a big jump in technology for me. I have no regrets using the machines.

I've owned two humminbirds and have two buddies that have had them. I had the top end unit at the time and I can say that hummingbird products are pretty much junk. We all had mulitple problems with them. Spend a little more and get a lowrance.

I don't doubt your word but could you give us more specifics. What units did you have? When? What were the problems? How did Humminbird respond to your problems?
This has not been the experience of Humminbird users in the past year or two. Since Johnson Outdoors bought Humminbird they have come a long way.
To the original poster,
Do a search on here for Humminbird or 987C SI and you'll find some old post that cover this topic well. There are pros and cons but the new Humminbirds are worth a look.

My buddy and I both had the panarama graph... $400 or so at the time from what I remember.
example... both units did this.. in 40' of water the depth would jump from 40' to 20' and back and forth. I tried every imaginable setting, shut off auto depth, adust sensitivity, ect. My buddies did the same thing. Seemed like the graph was reading the echo. 42' would jump back and forth from 42' to 21' ect. Send units back and it continued. I sold the boat with the unit.
Also had one prior that would not turn off. I had another buddy that had a portable that had the same problem, would not turn off with the button. Now.. this was back when they had a membrane over the buttons. Still... to many problems for me to ever trust them. Wheather they fix it or solve the problem doesn't help me a bit if when out of state on a fishing trip I planned months in advance and having graph problems.
Still have a old lowrance paper that works perfect. Also picked up a lowrance color unit. and a older X-85 in the Muskie boat. Great products from my experience.
We all rely heavily on the graph for accurate info no matter what type of fishing you do. I can't trust what a hummingbird is telling me giving my experience.
Make the smart decision and buy anything other than hummingbird.
I heard today that GM is going to start production of the Corvairs again. Still air cooled but they promise they solved the problems they had years ago.. safer too!! You can pull your boat with it.

BB, thanks for the reply. Sounds like you had a bad experience with your unit but that was a long time ago. Humminbird today is not the same company they were many years ago. They're now run by Johnson Outdoors, the same folks who run Minn Kota trolling motors. I certainly wouldn't knock the 900 series base on a past experience with a panorama. That's like saying don't by a Ford Expedition because I had a bad experience with my Pinto.

I tried the 987, and the matrix 97. They were both good units. I didn't keep them. I couldn't get used to the smaller screen on the 987. I was used to the lowrance 104. I'm going with the 111 this upcoming year. I also liked the better resolution on the lowrance's. More pixels equates to better resolution.
I'm not trying to knock humminbird, it just wasn't right for me

Anyone use a 900 on the ice? I'd love to move it to show the bottom contours on that side scan!
