I'm new to the La Crosse, WI and see a lot of people using lead core while trolling on the Mississippi River. I'm used to pulling boards with mono on Lake Winnebago and was wondering if you can use lead core with Offshore boards?
You can but the line on the lead(rod to board)is heavy and will drag in the water. May be better to get 10'6" rods to spread things out. Most river fishing is contour fishing.
Another option is segmented leadcore.

I have run 4 or 5 color off the offshore mini's. No problem.
Let all the core out, and clip in the mono.

Thanks everbody, I was kind of thinking that if I only put a few colors on and then clipped the board on to the mono that I would be okay.
Now I just have to figure out how to adjust the dive curves from the precision trolling book! :o

That is exactly what we do with core on Lake Michigan for salmon. Run out your core (and leader) and clip the board to the mono. We'll see anything from 2 color on up.

The big thing to remember when adjusting for the dive curves is that Leadcore is extrememly speed dependent due to it's large diameter. There will be no exact way to measure your depth except thru trial and error. Spend some time with your setups and run them slowly shallower and shallower until you hit bottom at your normal intended speeds. Do this on sandy flats and figure out your depths at certain speeds. Write it down for future reference and put it in your Precision trolling book plastic bag, then you don't have to keep repeating tests. You can adjust things and at least be in the ballpark for what you want. Your learning curve goes up very quickly.
