WAAS Enabled GPS in Midwest

A marine store salesman told me that there is no satellite resource available in the midwest that would allow WAAS performance.

Is this currently true?

Not sure what your definition of Midwest is, but the Garmin WAAS unit I bought last September worked great on Lake Erie fishing out of Huron, OH.

Maybe I should clarify my question.

The clerk said that the GPS will work, but the WAAS functionality will not work until the satellite resource is allocated. He said that WAAS currently only works on the east coast and west coast. The middle of the country is, according to him, WAAS-less. So to speak.

WAAS Phase 1 is complete.

Since June 4,1998, the WAAS site installation of 25 WRSs, 2 WMSs, 4 GUSs, and the required terrestrial communications to support the WAAS network have been complete.

WAAS works on Lake Erie. It shows you on the screen if the position fix the unit has is using WAAS. There were a few times when it lost the WAAS fix (still had the "regular" GPS fix), but the WAAS came back within a minute or so.

WAAS enabled Garmin units show you when you are receiving WAAS signal and what your accuracy is. I run my Garmin in my truck here in Nebraska all the time and have not had any problems with WAAS enabled.

I heard the same thing. The technology has not reached us yet. Wisconsin, Minnesota and the U.P. I am not sure about anywhere else. I was told nothing north of Chicago was enhanced by the WAAS signal.

I have a garmin with the waas feature. Live in WI and it works fine, also used it in MN with no problems. Every once in awhile the signal will go away for a couple secs, but then it comes right back.
