Buying a LCX 15 MT fish finder/gps unit. Is the dual frequency option transducer worth the extra 100 bucks?
50 kHz 37 degree 8,000 watts peak-to-peak
200 kHz 12 degree 4,000 watts peak-to-peak

against

200 kHz 20 degree 8,000 watts peak-to-peak

Can anyone explain the advantages/disadvantages of each?

Thanks

The 12 degree 200khz transducer has a very narrow cone and is excellent for "spot on spot" veiwing of the bottom with great detail. The 20 degree 200khz cone is wider veiwing a larger area of the bottom, with great detail, a better choice for trolling. The 50khz 37 degree transducer has the widest cone for veiwing a larger area under the boat such as cannon balls. The 50khz has less detail than the 200khz, and is not a good choice in shallow water, but the 50khz works very well in deep water. The bright side of running both is there is no crosstalk with another 200khz transducer. This allows you to run the 20 degree 200khz and the 50khz at the same time on 2 different locators with out getting a screen full of artifact. You can to this with a split screen mode also. I run both and set my 200khz sensativity to pick return signals from small bait fish, then I set the 50khz sensativity to "not see" the baitfish, but continue to mark larger fish. This way I can tell at what depth the predator fish are swimming in a school of baitfish. Drop the cranks into the zone and hang on......

Stony: I have the duel and I like them both. I think it's worth the extra money. I fish both deep and shallow, so I wanted both. Go for the duel, I don't think you well be disappointed. Good Luck SOUNDING....Kaz

Kaz does the 50kHz work at all in water less than 20 feet?

Goose/Bill: Yes, both work in either water. Just the size of the cone at the depth you are at. As for the after additions, I think the software is there, you just have to get the duel transducer, which is fairly expensive. I bought mine right away. Waiting FOR SPRING....Kaz
