I'm in the process of getting a new 18' Lund and I'm leaning towards the 115 Yamaha 4-stroke. I would just like to hear what other Yamaha owners think of them, Good or Bad. How often do you have to change the oil and do they troll as well as people say they do?? Will I need to get a sea bag to slow me down enough to pull spinners? I couldnt decide between an E-tech or a Yamaha. Any thoughts on the E-tech would be great also. Thanks !!!

Yamaha makes very good engines.
If you want one on a Lund, you should get after it, asap.

I just got a G3 185 and I went with the 150 - I am happy I did. If I were you, I'd move up to the 150. Whatever Yamaha you go with, get it quick - they are going to be unavailable soon and make sure to follow the break-in procedures.

Make sure you get the horsepower the boat is rated for??? The four-strokes are extra weight...You'll need all you can get for hole-shot!!!I have the 200 HPDI 2-stroke on my 1900 and love it except for gas mileage when I'm standing on it....Paul:smash:

Have an F115 on my 1800 Explorer. You'll be very happy with a Yamaha. But, be careful with it, otherwise you'll chew up the starter. It's that quiet. I do a moderate amount of fishing, not on the water every weekend, but close. I check the oil every so often and change it once a year. It's really great on gas, gets down to about 2 mph, and fires up right away. Going on my 2nd summer with it, and so far, so good. Follow the owners manual in regards to break-in, and you'll be fine. The holeshot is good enough to get 2 teenagers up on skis, and I can still get into the mid-40's. One major point. Get a SS prop with decent rake and cupping. You'll be amazed at the difference.

Thanks guys for all the info. I ended up ordering the boat Fri. afternoon, I got the 115 Yamaha 4-stroke. They said that the 115 has plenty of power and plenty fast enough for the Explorer, its not as heavy as the Pro-V. Now I just have to wait cause its gonna take 4 to 6 weeks to get the boat. I should have it and rigged by the end of May so I can get into the slaughter on Lake Erie...LOL!! Thanks again!

Scott:

I bought an 1800 Fisherman in 2002 with a Yamaha 115 4-stroke and a 4-stroke T-8. I think you made a good decision. I go fast enough with 3 guys on board and a full 40 gallon tank of gas. I also had a Minn Kota AP 65 mounted and later added the co-pilot. The co-pilot is really nice. You can fish from anywhere in the boat and troll where you want to go.

Caution: When changing the oil, tilt your engine up and down a couple of times to get all the old oil out. Then: do not put in the whole amount of oil the manual states. Leave about 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart out, start your motor for a few minutes, shut it off and then check the level. Check the level again after about ten minutes. Full to the half mark is ok. This info from a Yamaha dealer who just returned from Yamaha dealer conf. and school.

Scott: I forgot to mention the Yamaha 115 4-stroke's gas consumption. You will love it!

I noticed you said ASAP for the Yamaha. Is that because they are in short supply are is it because you won't be able to get a Yamaha on a Lund.

If you are going with the 18 foot Lund - save your money and get the 150 for the boat.

You will be MUCH happeir with the Yamaha 150 4 storke for this boat compared to the 115.

The 115 will get the boat up and on plane, but you will be limited to the mid to high 30's and mayby on a good day touch 40 mph.

If you put 4 or 5 folks in the boat, you are going to struggle to get the boat on plane, unless you really go to a low pitch prop and then live with a 33-36 mph boat.

With a 150 mph motor - you will be running in the mid to upper 40s and be able to run at partial throttle most of the time, but able to easily handle the planing requirements of a heavily loaded boat.

Take care

I have a 1850SF Crestliner with a Yamaha F115.
Top end is about 40 mph. Plenty fast for me.
Many will say to go with the 150 for more speed.
But the F115 will troll down to about 1.0 mph.
I don`t know what the 150 trolls at, but I`ll
bet it`s not 1.0 mph.:)

You will not be able to get yamaha on a lund - they are going with mercury.

That is because there are only a few Lunds that remain that have been prerigged for Yamahas. As far as getting a Yamaha on a Lund, you will always be able to get that combo, only it is going to cost you more money seeing Brunswick has discontinued a partnership with Yamaha. You will get what you want, only pay more for it.

Does anyone else think that Yamaha is missing out by not having a 135 and 175 hp outboards? The 115 and 150 seem like stout motors but not enough to cover gaps from 115 to 150 and 150 to 200.

Actually, Yamaha took the action, not Brunswick.
As did Bombardier Recreational Products.

i am just starting my second year with my 1800 explorer and F115, i really love the boat/motor combination, the motor is very quiet, starts very easily, and is great on gas. I put on a Michigan rapture 17p SS prop on from the beginning and get between 42-44 mph at 5800rpms with 2 people in the boat.
I opted for the 115 instead of 150 mostly because i rarely fish with more then 2 people, and 42-45mph is plenty fast for me. As far as trolling goes, it trolls a little fast for my applications(around 2.5-3mph), this could be cause of the 17p prop(not sure), i mainly use my front minn kota auto pilot to troll with, if i need to use my main motor, i put out a trolling bag to slow down.
I followed the break in period in the manual , as far as oil changes, i did one after the first 10 hours, then once again at the end of the year, so hopefully once a boating season, if you use to troll alot, you may have to do it twice a year
