View Full Version : Reefrunners
What colour works the best under what conditions? How deep? Ant other lure suggestions? Rapala? Storm?
Thanks, Bill

Bill,
I was at Lake Erie this weekend and I decided that if I ever go to that lake again without running at least half of my lines with diving eriedescent reef runners then I AM STUPID!
I have fished the lake 6 days this year and over half of my fish and my only one over ten pounds have come on eriedescent reef runners.
My second choice would be tennesee shad diving husky jerks and silver/black/orange belly diving smithwicks and chrome/blue reef runners.
Good Luck
try the green reefrunner. it works great

LAST EDITED ON May-16-00 AT 01:56PM (CST)[p]OK! OK! You folks finally broke me down. I have been reading all those threads on this post about the wonders of the reefrunners. Sooooo, this morning I dropped over a hundred bucks on these things at Dakotamart (which I also found from you folks)!
I believe they'll work because of all that I have read. I do have 2 questions, though:
1) Do they run true out of the box, like rapalas'?
2) How hard are they to tune if they aren't running true?
By the way, there is another thread running at this moment on this post called "reefrunner" just full of info you are looking for
Thanks,

"KEEP YOUR LINES WET, YOUR POWDER DRY and THE BEER COLD"!!!
Very few run true out of the box. And yes they are tricky to tune. Here's why: they have a built in horizontal hunting action. In other words when they are perfectly tuned, they still want to kick out once in a while. If it is always in the same direction then they aren't tuned. You've got em when they go left one time and right the next. (Drives the fish nuts) Don't crank on eye too much, kinda sneak up on the center. Sounds worse than it is!! you will not be sorry!!! Good luck.

Not having run the reef runners yet, I need to ask this. Everyone talks about the searching action. Is this similar to that of the hot n tots. If so, I have had luck with the tots in only warmer water. Are the reef runners best only in warm water, or are they are good bait for the whole year?

They work for me from March to December. While they are one of the best lures I have ever found and are very durable they just won't hold up to chopping through the ice with the bill. Not to mention the hooks are so sticky sharp it would be hard to get a good grip to chop Ice with them. :-)
To answer you question Yes they work all year.

ETT,
Thanks for the info. I hope to be playing with them this weekend (depends on UPS). I have a Walleye tourney at Pymatuning. I have read nothing but "good" about these lures and am anxious to pull them.
Thanks for the insight on tuning. I did not know about the sideways "hunting" action. I might have been trying to tune the thing all day long as opposed to fishing it.

What is this, another magic bullet lure? somemore hooey about the one lure you need to have?OK I'll bite, Cabellas dosn't have much of a color selection, {just got two yesterday via UPS], any one got the adrress of the company or a good supplier? I fish Lake Cumberland in Ky, there are good numbers of eyes available, but every once in awhile one of those d-m stripers will grab one of your lures, and theres the devil to pay.One of the local favorites down here is the Bagley bassin shad, this is one deep diving puppy, 17 ft on 20 lb spider wire, but they can only be bought at one store, and he charges 7.50 apiece, plus its a 45 mile drive one way.

I ordered mine through DakotaMart 1-800-382-2553. I had ordered their flier online, received it quickly and ordered my share - $4.99 a pop (on sale, I think)!

Check out the other posts here at WC about Reef Runner retailers. Alot of the info is repeated. PERSONALLY, I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND DEN, AT THE SPORTSMANS OUTPOST. HE HAS AN EXCELLENT SELECTION AND MANY COLORS THAT OTHERS DON'T HAVE. CALL HIM @1-888-855-9032.

Blue and Chrome - Have had no trouble right out of the box. Caught 4 (biggest between 6 and 7 pounds) last Saturday night in about 1-1/2 hours on reef runner ripstick. Shallow diver about 6 to 10 feet at most. Used at sundown and just after. Don't just troll it steady though. Pump rod slowly to give added action. Pull up and then give slack. Worked well for my wife. She caught all four while I caught one on a #7 shadrap.

Have had good luck with the gold colour. Try it! Matt.
