View Full Version : split rings on crankbaits

Most, if not all, modern crankbaits have a split ring on the eyelet of the lure. I've been using stainless steel, ball bearing snap swivels which I tie to my line and then attach to the split ring. Do this for ease of changing crankbaits. But seems I read or heard somewhere doing the above will cause to much "movement" and can result in the lure running sideways. Have tried removing the snap ring on some lures but then found I couldn't attach the snap swivel because the eyelet was too close to the lures lip. Appreciate any thoughts or opinions on this.

Leave the split ring on, but change the snap swivel to a snap only. Your crankbaits don't spin, so you don't need the swivel. "Less is more" in this case.
If a lure runs sideways, it's not because of the snap, or split ring, it's because the eyelet is bent the wrong way. Bend it back the oppisite way from which the bait is running, with little moves, until the bait is running straight again.
Sometimes just fighting a fish will bend that little eyelet, so it's good to check how "true" the bait is running, after every fish you catch.

I agree, just use a snap. Also, I have found that on stickbaits like rouges and strait rapalas that removing the split ring from the bait helps A LOT, I still use a snap, I just remove the split ring from the bait. Good luck!
I agree as well. Tuning (super tuning) is the only way to accuratly predict the diving depth of any crank bait. I'm downright fussy about tuning. I check every lure every time I set it; period. I leave the split rings on and in fact I make sure it is turned so that the notch in the split ring is down (at the line tie loop) every time I set them. Just having it up against the snap can change the tune on some lures. Also, once in a while you'll run into a lure that must be retuned for every speed change. Tuning can not be over emphasized, unless you spend the whole day tuning, instead of fishing. Good luck.
