Over the past couple of years I have gotten the chance to meet alot of great people at shows, tournies, etc. It was so interesting to hear what the people really did for their real career. I was curious if anyone would like to share with the rest of us what they do for a living. In my real job I manage a commercial printing company.

I'm a junior at the University Of North Dakota majoring in Biology and Chemistry, looking to go into medicine; hopefully a radiologist someday - if anyone out there has some insight on how to get this done, please (PLEASE!!) let me know. I am a long ways from being sefl-suffcient, as I will have school loans through the roof. I spend my summers guiding on Devils Lake, thus I can justify my boat payment!

Mgr. of a regional freight company.

Goldpig my brother is a mechanical engineer that used to live in the Owatonna, MN area and got laid off now he works further north and this company is now struggling as well. What's the deal, economy must play a huge role in that field as a few years ago he was going gangbusters.....I feel for the both of you. In SE SD there is always a need for M.E. but not sure where the salary ranges are. Sorry!

Take care everyone!

Real job, is that what they call it, I prefer to think of it as a way to finance my fishing habit. Anyways, I work in a factory in the Twin Cities that makes computer chips. We work compressed work weeks, 3 12 hour shifts one week, 4 12 hour shifts the next. It's a tough week but you get alot of free time to fish. Best of all my days off are Sun-Wed so I can fish when the crowds are working.

Take care and good fishing,

Well, I work for a company called Genzyme Boisurgery here in NJ and we make a medical device called Synvisc. Hockey players, golfers and runners have used our product. It is used to replace the fluid in your knee. I started as an aseptic techinan on the day shift and have since been promoted to Senior aseptic techinan in charge of the second shift. We make other products also and our future looks brite. I work many hrs. so my fishing and hunting time is very limited. When I get the chance to do either I put forward all I have for the time there. Weather is a factor but I try to stay on the water or in my stand long after most people leave. I have taken many walleye and deer by tuffing it out. I have learned that fish bite, and deer move during the rain so I must be in on the action. Thats my real job. JJ

It is a pretty nice work environment (took me 2 years to get comfortable wearing shorts in the summer tho:) ) and really think it will help keep me young at heart;) Also is allowing me to complete my MBA over the next few years.
I'm also taking on a new second job this summer, raising my new fishing buddy!! He's due in June and is going to Kabetogama/Namakan on his first fishing trip in August!
I've got a feeling this might make finishing an MBA look easy.

I'm a scientist working in nuclear waste management at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. A major accomplishment of mine was that I led a scientific project to prove that some of our nuclear waste met all regulatory and legal requirements for disposal in a geologic repository in SE New Mexico near Carlsbad. This helped get the repository open and now waste can be cleaned up from DOE sites throughout the US for dispositioning in 1/4 billion-year-old salt beds there.

He should have great opportunity. the Lab is trying to hire ~1,000 this year and that might continue for another year or two. The Lab is getting a lot of money to develop anti-terrorist systems and to maintain the stockpile for national security. If he's in computer science, so much the better because a new super computer comes on-line here in the near future. Computers is considered a "hot skills" area where they're getting mid-year bonuses and especially high raises.

OK, Folks,

I doubt that there are very many problems related to any aspect of fishing we can't solve. In fact, there's such a diverse range of skills & experiences that we could probably sove most problems of any type. I've been on some National technical teams & whenever we had a broad base of skills / expertise to draw upon, we've done well.

The only profession I think I didn't see is that of "Politician." Is that because only fishermen lie and politicians don't? What's your spin on this? Or did someone not want to profess they were a politician <wink>?

At times, I think my job never let me grow up...you see I still get to play with trucks and firecrackers - sort of. Just big yellow trucks that haul over 100 tons of rock and fireworks to the tune of thousands of pounds of explosives.

Degree in mining engineering and worked in many capacities at metal mines mostly in the western US. Got out of the "metals" and into "industrial minerals" - less cyclical and everyone needs kitty litter or at least concrete for sidewalks! Less technical and more managerial these days. Now I am at a plant where we manufacture cement - ship about 2.7 million tons per year of the stuff on the Great Lakes system. I get the mining end of it - still don't quite get the shipping end of it always - just doesn't seem right to have all that dry, powdered cement in a boat.

Just say "no" to DuPont spinners.

I was quite surprised to see there were no other "Headhunters" here........for a while there it seemed everyone without a college degree had jumped on the staffing bandwagon!

I've been recruiting computer professionals throughout Michigan and Indiana since 1987. Started my own agency 5 years ago. Specialize in AS/400 contract and direct placement. The employment market had been slow to state it mildly. Dead is more like it! But I wouldn't trade my life with anybody.

I wish they had some 'Eyes in Indiana!

I'm retired from the US Army. I now work as most of you know from previous posts for Dick"s Sporting Goods. I am the Key Sales Associate for Tackle. Also work Hunting and Camping. Just find it hard to bring home a full paycheck with all the tackle I buy.

I work for IBM in the "instrumentation" area of our environmental controls group. One highlight of my job..I'm the driver of our air boat that's part of our "oil spill response team" that's required due to our proximity to a river! I'm trying to get them to put a trolling motor on it! Good Fishing, Sluggo (Chris)

Don't be so hard on yourself Jeffster. Anyone that has attempted a painting project just around the house would call you an artist. There's a reason it's referred to as "Skilled Labor". Same thing for dry wallers and plasterers.

I'm a Computer Network Support Engineer (That's what the boss printed on my business card!)...I supervise a team of Support Technicians for the company...And, I do the "weird and whacky", anything they can't (or won't) do. I also design and supervise installs and upgrades. I am also leading our "Linux Initiative"...whatever that means...And, I fish as much as possible...for food and fun!

Capt Jay,
Where are you a cop at? My bro is a cop in South Lyon and he has a lot of friends on his force who graduated from Lake Superior State? You might know quite a bit of them as I think they were there about the same time. Send me a message and I might be able to use your guide service.

Man you must be a walking IBM commercial!

That does sound like fun, actually getting to do away with systems that don't work with what you already have... instead of just having to put up with them. Man I long for the day when we can turn off our ancient RS 6000

Super post - absolutely floored by the variety, high tech and high end on this board. Equally stunned by the lack of Journeyman tradespeople.
