I've been fishing my whole life out of the wrong boat! I am not wealthy by any means and am becoming desperate to fish somewhat competitively. I currently have a cheap pleasure boat and my family (wife and two boys 5 & 11) love watersports. Therefore over the past couple months I've been searching for the perfect boat in my price range (under 10k with at least 125hp.)

It seems as if the Lund tyee models meet all of my requirements the best considering the boats in my price range. Today I found one that I really like as the setup meets almost everything I'm looking for and want everyones input positive and negative, including what you think it should be valued at?

1988 Lund Tyee - 5.5 or 18'
*Shorelander trailer in good shape 1yr. old tires new winch and tie downs.
*150 hp Johnson and 9.9 Evinrude Kicker (which I cannot find a NADA value for?) The Kicker does not have electric start. Both run good.
*Eagle Fish ID
*Rod Locker, Built in travel rod holders, 4 trolling rod holders, 4 pedastal seats two of which are air ride.
*snap cover and custom storage cover
*marine band with 7-8' antenna
*stainless prop 21 degree pitch

Interior/exterior are both in excellent shape considering the year of the boat. Only decals slightly peeling by the gas tank.

Concerns: Heavy boat, owner states that it filled up with water 6" above the floor one time when got caught in massive waves, owner tourney fished, cannot determine why the guy is selling it- other than says cannot afford to have it due to two young children?

He is asking $8,250 - I think according to NADA it's retail is closer to 7K? Please be honest with me, I'm not looking for all the bashers to reply only those that care and are willing to share their knowledge.

Thanks in advance,
hopefully the next eyedoctor!

Owned a 1989 Lund Rebel Special for 11 years and fished tourneys in it Was 5.3 Tyee. Yes they are a heavy boat and a very safe boat. Also been in some big waves and never had that kind of water in it. Might of been operator error!!!!!! Make sure you check all the rivits in the bottom of the boat to make sure they are all tight. Great boat to get started with and will last a long time if you take care of it.My only concern would be the 2 engines as that company is out of business. If you can get worked on where you live I would have to say its not a bad deal.

You shouldn't buy any boat without a test on the water- Maybe you aleady have since you stated that the engines run well. See how well do the engines start and run. Try out all the electrical stuff, livewells, bilge pump etc. See if the boat has any water in the hull after being on the water for a while, if it leaks, you need to know this before making your final offer.

As far as 6" of water over the deck, that guy was extremely close to foundering. By the time the water is over the decks, you can imagine how much water is below! One area that people overlook for water entry is the motor well, if there are any openings here around connectors or cracked or broken access holes, the boat fills up below without your knowledge. By the time you see the water, you can be in BIG trouble. A second bilge pump with an automatic switch is a good investment if you fish big water.

If this boat has been well taken care of, (and it sounds like it has)doesn't leak and everything works, it may well be worth close to 8 grand. Look for other similar boats that you can find for sale and see how the prices compare. Good luck with your purchase.

It sounds like a good rig, just what you're looking for. I'm not sure I'd pay what he's asking for it though. I was thinking something like $7500 if it's in good condition. If it's low hours, and excellent condition, it may be worth what he's asking though.

Don't get jumpy when buying a boat, one thing I learned through 4 years of boat shopping is that there will almost always be a better deal sooner or later when it comes to used boats. There are lots of tyee's and other similar boats out there.

Good luck shopping,

you have a boat
Interest rates are down trade off the old get new almost all manufacturers that make fishing boats make what is called fish and ski
but by the time the kids learn how to ski they'll be tourny fishin they only have to be with parent or guardian during a tourny and combo boats are selling at a better resale than pleasure boats

Sounds like a decent rig but overpriced. Keep in mind that you are going to want to put a lot better electronics on it if you are going to fish any tournamnets.

Thanks to those that have responded: As mentioned in my original post, I want to tourney fish and desire a motor over 125hp for the main motor. Therefore kills the option of a NEW boat. The boat I own currently is only worth about $2500 and my budget is only going to allow a moderate increase/upgrade.

Eyez thanks for giving your recommendation on the value. This is what I was mostly looking for. I am able to evaluate my own needs. Mainly looking for other peoples thoughts on the value of this boat. I will not offer anymore than I feel it's worth.

This boat is very well kept as the owner knows boats and definitely used often. Due to the usage, year, condition, I believe it's probably only worth 7k. We'll see what he says to that.

Thanks to those that read my post and responded accordingly.

NEWEYE ON THE WAY!
