Whe I am in the U.S. I see a lot more Dodge V10's. I am thinking about upgrading from the 360 in my next one. Any thoughts on mileage, power and problems experienced with this engine would be appreciated.

Unbridled power, and Gas Pig come to mind. What's wrong with the 360? If it is more power you want, you may want to consider the diesel engines. More power, much better milage.

The V-10 has a reputation for climbing cliffs to get to the gas tanker that they need to run.

If you have a big towing situation, and don't want to go diesel - it is truly the motor of choice.

Most folks who have a big towing situation, go with the diesel, rather than burn all of the gas in the v-10.

Numbers like 10-12 mpg come to light - when you talk typical gas mileage during towing situations with the v-10.

15-20 mpg - for the same rig - equipped with a diesel.

Take care

Hey Jeffster,
I bet your driving a truck that's designed to look/perform like a Dodge!(Chevy or Ford).

have a 99 ram v-10 full size bed and quad doors...4x4 with trany cooler 2500, and most of the stuff...keep my truck camper loaded on bed 99% of time as i use it all the time...not one problem since i bought new in 99.....terrible gas milage...got 11mpg once...went to lake erie with 21 ft boat and camper...went 80 mph and got 7 mpg..on the way home drove very slow...60mph..just to see what would be my best gas milage...8mph...so even tho this is 14% improvement ...the one mpg is hardly worth going 20mph slower...the motor does not even work when i'm going 80mph....generally get 8mpg on most trips...i check milage on most trips...steve

Friends who have them say they'll pass everything but a gas station. I guess most don't buy a V10 for fuel mileage anyway. I haven't personally heard of any problems with them.

I have a Ford V10 and I am quite pleased with the mileage. On the highway I get 15 mpg consistantly and have gotten 16 mpg empty. Pulling a boat( Tandem Skeeter ) I get 10 - 11 mpg at around 70 mph which I consider good.

Not all V10's are gas hogs.

Father-in-law has the V-10 and I have the 360 V-8. FIL uses his to haul a 25' Cuddy as well as horse trailers. The truck has 100K miles and the only problem he had is the differential. He had a lot of problems with gear growling and clunking sounds when it was new and Dodge recommended heavier gear oil which didn't solve the problem. Eventually they came up with a workable solution and he has about 80K since the fix without any trouble. I understand that Dodge has corrected the problem in newer vehicles. As for cost of operation, we took a hunting trip to CO with a guy who had a Cummins Diesel Dodge. Both trucks were loaded heavily and round trip from WI the trucks burned gas within $10 (diesel was more expensive). YMMV!

WOW, Rew, I wish I could get 10-12mpg and that is just with the 360!
Towing gets me 9.7 mpg and easy does it open road no tow is 13 mpg at best! This is with a 2500 though.

Mike.. I've heard rumors that the Fords with the new state of the art transmissions will allow towing in overdrive and outproduce the mpg of the v-8's!

Wish I had a Ford dealer around that wanted to sell trucks half as much as our Dodge dealer.

Howdy Gilligan.

With My current (soon to be former) truck and the ones before it, I towed in overdrive.

This Chevy, and the two fords, always in overdrive, unless a real steep hill. The Dakota in the middle of em I used OD once I was rolling at highway speeds.

Never had a tranny problem in the bunch, all had more the 50,000 miles put on by me and all had tranny coolers/tow packages. All had dealer(salesman) recommendation to tow in OD.

Just take extra care of the tranny. I changed the oil every 2,500 miles, and changed/flushed tranny fluid every 15,000 miles.

But that is just what I have done.

Have fun.........R

Spa:

He had it fixed under warranty when it was fairly new. He seemed to take the truck in on a monthly basis until they fixed it. I believe that he may have gotten a new posi assembly. Whatever they did, they updated his differential to e identical to the newer vehicles. Sorry that I don't have any more info for you.

Dodge??? Are you kidding me? My dad has a Suburban with 130k miles, and I have an F150 with 120k miles, and not a single problem. And I do A LOT of towing. My friend, who even works for DaimlerChrysler won't buy a Chrysler vehicle again, and he gets vehicles at dealer cost as an employee. He had his fuel pump go out at 60k miles, and all his bearings went out at 50k miles.

Chrysler makes second class vehicles. The ford 5.4L and the chevy 5.3L will out tow, and get better gas mileage than the Dodge 360.

And if you need a bigger motor, Ford's 6.8L, and GM's 6.0 and 8.1 are light years ahead of Dodge's V10.

Bottom line....DODGE SUCKS!

Yeah! This comes from a bears fan. All the new trucks are Ram wannabes...

UH. Does anyone recall who won the craftsman series last year? Any bets on this year?

There is a reason why Ford and Chevy trucks outsell Dodge every year. F150-best selling vehicle for the past 24 years? Chevy right behind. I think that speaks for itself!

And trucks being Ram wannabes??? Hmmm....didn't Dodge FINALLY get rid of the 5.2L and make a 4.7L motor like the Ford 4.6 and GM 4.8L??? Pretty soon, the idiots at Chrysler will realize that the 5.9L sucks, and will make a motor similiar to Ford's 5.4L, and GM's 5.3L. Like I said, dodge is light years behind Ford and GM.

Yeah, and we all know what FORD stands for don't we, found on road dead, fix or repair daily, and a couple of others that aren't appropriate for this site.

wow, your right these 3 trucks sure look the same (long hood, truck cab, and a bed)!! oh, wait that's BECUASe they are all trucks!.....

I havn't driven a D@#$e but that is becuase I like to DRIVE my truck not look at it in the repair shope!!

all kidding aside, my f-150 (2001 xlt 2wd) and my f-in-law's chevy silverado (1500 ??? 2wd) drive quite differerntly from each other
~mine has stiffer ride and higher feel, while his is softer ride and lower feeling. plus they steer and generaly handle different....so pleast tell me how these drive alike, or "like a dodge", other than the fact that they are all trucks.

Actually all new trucks stink so I buy the one I like the look of. Consequently all you Chev and Ford owners, when Dodge brought out the new body style in 1994 it's sales increased by 600%.When either of the other two can do that then they can critisize.

Dodge has made several innovations in truck design over the last 6 years that Ford and Chev have first critisized and then copied later.Quad cab and seatbelts that retract into the seat are just two examples.
That quote "freinds don't let freinds drive Dodge". I ##### near wet my pants laughing at that one, so you can see I don't take pride of ownership too seriously.
By the way has anyone driven the new Dodge truck. Amazing!!!And some great interior innovations I'm sure will get copied again.

I have a 1998 Dodge v10. It has 60,000 miles on it. Has never been in the shop once. Maybe I lucked out. Why bash other trucks? They all are nice. It is just what you like at the time. I will probably go back to another Dodge. I have also owned Chevy's and Ford's in my life time. The choice is yours which one you choose. They all have there problems every once in a while because they are made by humans. And about poor gas mileage. You should know what you are getting into when you buy one. Never believe what the sticker says about gas mileage. They test them on a computer driving on flat roads with no fluctuation in the gas pedal.
