Mounted the dual board mast today and the boards should be here tomorrow. I have run the big boards before -but now I have seen guys use rubber bands, instead of the clips. Can someone explain the setup to me??

The rubber band is sinched around the line and put into the release. Usually a size 14 band which stretches additional when you have a small fish. It gives you 1 more thing to use as a bite indicator. Type of band depends on type of release and how rough it is.

We have been using the rubber band system for years. Once we count the "passes" we don't bother again, just out to the rubber bands.
Also a great strike indicator (or weed hook up)

All we use are rubber bands and closepins. It works good and is cost effective.

After some on-line advice on WC from ETT and others I tried the rubber bands w/ my big boards and clips for the first time last week on Erie running Reef Runners.. Worked great!!! With the weather and breeze last week there is absolutely no way I'd have held my lines with clips alone (boards were nearly doing flips at times!!!), and with the rubber bands it was virtually 1 clip / 1 fish so I really didn't have to pull the boards in to retrieve clips until the end of the day.

As was mentioned, just attach the rubber band to your line with a cinch knot and attach the rubber band to the clip. On the lighter fish you could actually look at the stretch of the rubber band to see that you had something on if you couldn't tell for certain on the rod tip. Additional bonus was no need to remember to reset line counters all the time, just reel the rubber band right onto the reel and let back out to the same distance every time.

Another great piece of info I've learned here on WC!!

yes it works real well. Anyone know where to get rubber bands that are bright orange or any other color thats easy to see? My old eyes sometimes have trouble seeing the strech in the rubber band.

PJ, I thought that the yellow rubber bands worked the best.. I had a variety pack that I think came from a Staples, Office Depot type place w/ (bright)yellow, red, and blue I think.. Yellow was definitely the easiest to see. I've yet to find where I can get a package of just 1 particular color though.

PJ,
The real deal are the crape (sp) bands. They are red in color and have a much higher rubber content. They are tuffer and stretchier, and don't decompose in sunlight nearly as fast.

Rubberbands and shower curtain rings also work great.

I run power pro and like to measure each time when setting lines back out whether the rubber band is still there or not. Seems sometimes the band can slip when trying to jerk it from the clip. I frequently see a 5-10 ft difference after landing a fish, especially if the rubber band has been stretched from catching more than one fish.
