View Full Version : What Questions Would You Ask On Trolling

Hi all:
I've been asked to give a short talk on trolling Winnebago at
a local sportsmans club on Thursday night.I'm going to try to keep it simple in order to appeal to all skill levels and not put too much emphasis on high dollar equipment etc.
What I would like to know is what are some questions that a lot of people have regarding trolling that they're afraid to ask for fear of looking "foolish". If I can work these answers into my talk it would probably get the info out and inform those who are reluctant to ask. Thanks for your help.

Dale,
Just knowing how you respond to questions on this message board, it's clear to me that you are a natural "teacher", so just like you said, keep it simple and cover all the bases. You will do just fine.

Talk about how to set the boards, and how to line the boards up for easy reading... use of tattle flags, and what they are for (If your an Off Shore board user, I can't remember)....How to take a board off the line properly when fishing alone or with a partner....the need for the Precision Trolling book, and how to use it...the use of snapweights for getting baits down...why baits should be set above the fish your seeing on your locator...how to test what speed is best for a specific crankbait....how to vary your speed of the baits by doing "S" turns, and paying attention to those details when a fish hits...what length/weight/action rods to use for optimum performance (without telling them which brand to use, unless of course your sponsored by that rod company..wink wink)...why linecounter reels, or linecounter attachment thingies are necessary...
And then...which baits are best on the Bago system...How to tune a crank when it is out of tune...

That should get you at least a half hour or 45 minutes...lol

That's all I can think of until I drink more coffee...;-)

Have fun!

Juls

Hi

I drag lindy's a lot, and bounce jigs, along a ledge or weedline, I like to go very slow, very peaceful, especially early morning with the sun rising over the pines. Speed is the real question, how fast, or how slow for this situation.

We are going to try trolling for the first time this year. One question I had that took a long time for me to find the answer was: Once you hood a fish, where does the board go? Does it fall off the line and you have to go and retrieve it? etc.

How about what types of hardware to use to keep the release set up so they work correctly. I have never mastered running planer boards so that I can get the board either not to release when in big waves or so that they do release when a decent fish hits. How does one find the happy medium?

I always struggle with the releases. What are the best releases available? I have used the yellow birds boards and I am sure they are not very good but I am just starting out. What would you recommend for a lower cost planer board that is fairly easy to set up? Up until a year ago I never did much planer board pulling and determined that I am not yet very good at it.

I have been fishing for years and used about every method of presentation with ease until planer boards.

Dale,
Do you know if your presentation is open to the public? If so - time and place? Thanks

All the above and:

How do you rig for a tangle free ;-) enviroment? -

Stacking downriggers properly for multiple line presentations.

How to set lines when running boards i.e. furthest line away from the boat has the longest lead or setback.

How to run flatlines with other presentations in the water.

I guess I could have included time and place but I'm geeting older and have been exposed to a lot of lightening and stuff.
I'll be at the Twin City Rod and Gun club meeting at the Forester Club on Spencer St. in Appleton, Thur. at 7:00 . I'm sure their meetings are open to the public. Don't look for any fancy charts and graphs but I'll share what I know. Thanks for the responses so far.

Dale,
I've done seminars for 20 years, and always keep it short allowing lots of time for questions. Here's an idea, take some sponsors product, like a hat or a lure (Reef Runners work great), or I've used hat hooks, stick on measureing tapes, spools of line, what ever as bait for the first few questions. Usually I have 5 "prizes" there but often only use 2 or 3 of them. That gets the ball rolling and , it's al down hill from there.

1 other tip, have fun doing it. The more fun you have, the better it will be received. Good luck and tight lines.

I have one for ya.

If you're running spinners behind boards for suspended fish how do you know how deep you're actualy running.Obviously if your running fairly tight to the bottom its fairly simple but if you need to run them up it seems like geuss work or trial and error. Is this a common thing or do you generally switch to cranks where you can get a pretty close running depth from the Precision Trolling guide?

Just wondering.
