I didn't look at the photos...but unless they recently planted walleyes in the Netherlands...those Dutch fish would be Zander...A cousin of the walleye, that look very much like walleyes.

I guess the question would be what type of water they were caught in.
Not absolutely sure, but I thought zander were a brackish &/or a salt water fish & walleye were cool fresh water fish.
Plus I thought I've seen pics of zander that had some blue in their lateral line despite being much larger than the walleye.
Not a fishery biologist so I could be wrong.
Hers a link for zander:

I have a friend in the netherlands who routinely fishes for Zander.
He has sent me pictures of the typical 12 lb zander that he catches.
It is not that infrequent that he is able to pull up a 20 lb zander as well.
He uses virtually the same techniques that we do to catch the smaller north american walleyes.
Take care

Do zanders taste like walleyes? Does a small zander taste better than a large zander, as many folks say is the case for walleyes?
Valuable info if I ever go back to the Netherlands or Belgium.

Yes Zander do taste about the same as walleye. We purchased some from a local seafood supplier for a church fishfry. Bought both walleye fillets and zander fillets. Could not really detect any difference in taste.
By the way, in the August issue of Dakota Country magazine, there is a picture and story about a gal who caught a 31" 10-12# zander in Spiritwood Lake right here in ND. Back in the late 80's the ND G&F brought in zander fry or fingerlings and planted them in that lake. After years of test netting, they thought none survived. In the past few years they are starting to be caught. They certainly are beautiful fish. I've been told the Europe they grow as big as 40 pounds. Sure would like to see one my line that big!:9

Yes they do taste just like walleye- so much so in fact that they (the food industry) try to pass them off as walleye in restaurants. There was a investigative report done in the twin cities on this and there was a large number of restaurants passing Zander off as walleye. Maybe someone on this site remembers this and can refresh our memories.

here's one link to an old post- the link provided in the post doesn't work anymore but it is about the old "bait and switch" with the Zander.

How would you tell if you caught one or not? They look alike. Are there any distinct differences?

If you take a close look at the pictures, you'll note the lack of a white tip on the bottom of the tail fin. Also notice the horizontal stripes in the dorsal fin. Quite different from walleyes.

Look at my previous reply. I included a link to a pic of one.
I like the idea of the fish in stores and restaurants not being walleye.
If nobody bought walleye, nobody would commercial fish walleye.

WOW...Nice fish. They do look different than walleye though. Look at their head and mouth. They kinda look like a salmon head. Notice the hooked mouth parts. Also, they have a STRONG dutch accent. It was really hard to understand them. That would be the dead give away they are not North American walleye.:rotflmao:

I asked Swede to send me a couple of pictures of zander caught over there. He sent two but the one was enough out of focus I didn't post it, but here's the good one. 101 cm = 39.76 inches and 10.1 kg = 22.2 pounds of fish.

He didn't say who the person in the picture was.
