View Full Version : Favorite "Fish On" Expression

Atomic Eye
02-21-2002, 01:26 PM
When I first feel that heaviness of a fish on my line, or I'm crossing it's eyes, I often say or think something like,"Whoa, there she is!" I'm curious if others would share what their expression at that "moment of truth" is? What is it that you say or think in that first instant when you know you've got a fish on and the rod bends into a "horsehoe?"

When a fish is hooked while drifting on Lake Erie, the big question is whether it's an eye or a gd sheephead. So, in our boat we all start chanting "eye, eye, eye" all the way in. Try it - it works!

Not real sure. I'm kinda confused by the intent of "fishing" and as such am kinda confused by the question. I thought fishing was a rich man's way of taking all this fancy and expensive gear for a boat ride. I know that when I go hunting, I am in reality just taking my gun for a walk. Hummmm.... I'm gonna have to pay attention to what I might utter next time I take my gear for a ride in the boat, heck, maybe I'll even catch a fish.

I'm on my cell phone in the boat all the time doing business. in fact one of my customers distinctly heard the thumping of a fish on the floor one time when I asked him to "hold" for a minute. Not having a clue I'm even out in a boat he says "Gosh, whatever that was almost sounded like a fish bouncing around". I litorally had to pause and gain my composure before I could speak with out busting a gut.....

I will yell "Fish-On" when I know it's a fish for sure, if I have to make a few cranks on the reel and wait for some response from my rod, and it's close to the boat I just holler "NET". Sometimes I will also have a "LDR", which is not good, a Long Distance Release, and I will respond with ';[]/=-.,/;'][=-.GOOD FISHIN TO ALL.

"TUNA" We used to fish for salmon on the north pier of the Au Sable river. A regular every year was a gentleman named Old Nick. A coal miner from down South. Every fall he stayed up here in Michigan for our Salmon run. Every time he had a fish on, he would yell in his loudest voice "TUNA". The looks he would get amazed us all. I use it now as well and get the same looks from everyone near us. It's allot of fun.

Because we often fish in a pack of boats with jigging spoons the usual is in a very rushed hushed whisper "FISH". If we're trolling and no one is around, first to see the rod go says "Fish" real loud and the other guys yells, "Oh yeah, The Sheephead King"! Then we pray for Walleye.

My spontaneous responses to a “fish-on” can vary from one species to another I have been told.

A close friend pointed out to me last year that I have a diabolical snicker once I set the hook on a fish.

If it is a big fish on the run you’re likely to hear a “We-We go piggy”, followed by more diabolical snickering. If my fish is bigger then my fishing partners, the snickers are more pronounced. At least that is his claim anyway.

If I set the hook and immediately know it is a huge fish. I apparently develop a very serious tone, no diabolical snicker, and say one word, “SUMO”, If I do allow you remotely near a “SUMO” fish on my line, with a net. You can bet that you are a “TRUSTED” friend indeed.

If I loose the “SUMO” fish, I am told I have been known to pout. Loosing a “SUMO” fish can lead to “OCD” behavior and long hours seeking the lost “SUMO”. If you knocked said “SUMO” fish off with the net. Well, we just won’t go there will we Eh? Sit down, “Shut up and fish”, we aren’t going anywhere!

;)

Howdy,

Generally "Got Im!" Once in a while it will be "Fish on." When a really big fish hits, or a startling or vicious strike happens it will be, "Ooooooh!"

I also like to trash talk to the fish as I am fighting them. Stuff like. "Is that all ya got?" "C'mon you little bast##d, bring it on."

I really don't have any one real phrase. The one I do miss more than anything is the quiet, "Max, fish." But since max is gone, I won't be saying that soon.

reading all the posts you get a real sense of how much we all love fishing...some were hilarious, last fall I started using the expression, "we've been issued another one" we were fishing for those large fall hogs Lake Ont produces and had some days with 20+ fish using planer bds. and this expression somehow captured the moment just right when another bd was being pulled back.. On days when the fishing was really good if we went 15 mins or so without a fish when a board would go back I would say, finally...it was the best fall ever...you always hope it will happen again.

I've always said, "There ya go" real quiet like.

A friend of mine would get all excited and be yelling that he had one on, I'd look at his line about 5 seconds and pronounce, "It's a norton." Used to just irritate the crap out of him. Then he caught his first muskie. All he could say (in prayer like fashion) was, please let me take a picture, please, please, please. We did land the fish and got lots of pictures (a nice 44-inch muskie), hasn't gotten one since.

Another time... it was the first opening day with my brand new boat. Myself and 2 friends were fishing a shoreline, casting spoons for nortons, when the middle guy yells, "I've got one, I think it's a f**cking log." In those days my boat control wasn't real good and the wind was blowing us around a bit, so the drag was going and he'd gain line and the drag would go again. Well, I finally got control of the boat, turned out that he had snagged a log, a real log. After that, whenever anyone hooked a fish that was on the trip had a "f**cking log."

My youngest has the theory that is she doesn't watch her bobber, she will catch more fish, so it's "Now where is that bobber??? Oh I have another fish, imagine that, ME catching another fish." She usually outfishes everyone and is kind of sarcastic for a 10-year old. We're starting to have a hard time getting my father in law to come along.

OK. This thread is history. I'll go through it & narrow it down to the coupla' funniest ones for a poll because there were a couple that were so funny that they made some folks inhale their coffee and then "spray paint" their keyboards with it. Thanks for sharing, folks.

Last chance to put your most creative "fish on expression" in the poll.
