I am looking into purchasing a 30 gallon shad bait tank. Does anyone have any suggestions on which one is the best?

i was down at Dale Hollow, Tenn a couple years ago and the guides there used live shad for bait. I talked to one guide, and he said the tank must be rounded with no sharp corners. They pump Oxygen into the tanks also.
30 gals might be small. The guys down there removed the front seat and the tanks took up most of the deck space. Shad must be a real pain to keep alive. What are you using them for anyway?
Cabelas has some tanks for shad and "sport fishing" magazine (saltwater) has had ads and recomendations int the past.

Grayline is rated pretty much at the top of the list for bait tanks but I'm not sure they have a 30 gal or not and they are very pricy. I have a custom made 35 gal "Clearwater Bait Tank" made here in Oklahoma by John Harless who has been making bait tanks for Striper fishermen all over the southwest for quite a few years. A good bait tank isn't cheap, but is worth it's weight in gold when it will keep fragile threadfin shad alive and healthy for several days. If you'd like, I can get John Harless's phone number for you (think it's on my bait tank) if you want to drop me an email. I have had mine for four years now and have not had any problems with it at all. There are other cheaper brands out there but you get what you pay for.

Thanks for the info. I have narrowed it down to Blue Water, Ron Vest Super Bait Tank II, Grayline, and Creek Bank. These have been used a lot on the NSBA tournament trail. I am leaning towards the Blue Water and Super Bait Tank II. I am just trying to make the final decision.

Yep. I don't think that gizzard shad would make it through the winter in my pond. Too hard to keep.
I am going to get a good baitwell so that I can keep a bunch of the bigger ones without them looking lethargic. I like it when the bait takes drag.:rotfl:

I have a 100 gallon cattle tank made by rubber maid I bought at central tractor farm supply. I have a pond pump in it with a filter system including 2 layers of filter media and charcoal. Also an airator.
I have kept as many as 3 lbs of goldens and emeralds in it for a long time. You have to keep it in a cool place or add gallon jugs of frozem water in it to keep the water cool. Heat will kill quicker than low oxygen.

What do you use for a lid? Can you post a picture of the filters and pumps in the setup?
Thanks.
