What types of maintenance does everyone do on their reels during the off season?

I curious to find out what different techniques people use or maybe it is a special product that you use.

Baitcaster, spinning reels, does anyone treat one style of reel significantly different then others?

I just was getting ready to look over and clean my reels when I thought it would be fun to find out what different things other anglers may do.

Clean and lube. Marine grease (neutralizes water to prevent corrosion) on gears. Lightweight silicone on moving plastic parts.

Completely tear them all apart, remove all the old grease/oil, grease/upgrade the drags, flush and oil the bearings, apply lube and oil where needed.

This is a good example of proper baitcaster maintenance http://www.tackletour.com/articlereelmaintenancedaiwatdsol.html

SALT AND SAND is a reels worst enemy. I,ve had handles fall right off from minnow salt. That stuff is corrosive.Light soap and hot fresh water takes off the salt.If your taking the reel apart to re greese take your time and lay everything out in order on a large table. clean all parts with lent free cloths and use marine greese to re coat gears, shafts and bearings.Re assemble and check for smooth operation.Store indoors.

I always back the drags off on all of my reels when I take them out of the boat. Then about Feb. I start restringing and lubricating using Quantum's Hot Sausce Lubes {best I've found}.

I was just reading my stats and "from " locations so thought i would come over here and see what's happening. thank you Dan for mentioning us. You guys talking about salt, here's a tip that might help you. after each fishing trip, rinse your reels, which you probably already know and do, however, remove the cap on the handle and rinse the salt from the spool shaft under the cap. If you have your grease handy, fill the cap with grease and then re mount it on handle and secure. Remove the excess that oozes out. salt gets under that handle cap. also you might want to remove the pawl cap and rinse with water to help get out all the salt in worm gear. I'm talking about baitcasters now.
Dan, our trip to ICAST was great. We made BASSMASTER MAGaZINE DEC Issue. we be pretty proud for sure. conniek

I maintain my reels all year long. I restring any mono reels several times a year to make sure the line is in good condition. I change my fireline simply by taking it from one baitcaster to another (changes end for end) once a year. I wipe them down good this time of year and I may lube them if I think they need it. That's about it.
