Knock on the top of the head with a blunt object seems to be the best way. Any others?

In Alaska, they shoot the Halibut in the head with a .45 or a 410. You could try that.

Get em in a choke hold. They'll passout before falling asleep permanently.;)

That explains the powder burns and the Halibut boats lost at sea?

Break their neck. It takes a little practice but once you get the hang of it your golden.

Throw on ice when caught, then fillet including zippering and trimming, lightly breaded with crackermeal and about 4 minutes in 375 degree Canola or Peanut oil would be my recommendation...

Seriously if you plan to eat your fish you are better off killing them sooner and putting them on ice rather than letting them swim around in a "Livewell/Deadwell" all day expecially in warmer water. Right now and in the spring it probally doesn't matter much with the cold water.

Bleeding them by a simple cut to a few of the gills on each side with a pair of scissors will improve things even more - expecially on the bigger fish.

For the whitest fillets clip the gills and bleed them out.

yeah, but it's near their tail LOL I know some who call the area at the bottom of the gills the neck (sorry I don't know the name for that particular body part. Also, a lot of them cut out that area -- wiith a fin on each side -- and deep fry it. Makes nice finger food (hold onto the fins) and it is good eatin -- like a cheek, but it's a neck LOL
Oh well, you probably know what I mean.

What is this big time wrestling LOL I catch alot of big eyes on Erie, never had to throw down with one....yet, wait actually I did, the cooler was full and one kept jumping out and slimming up my carpet on the front deck. I had to beat her 3 times before she died, my crew was mad at me but I took it personall. Yea yea tough guy beating up the walleye. I know.
