Has anyone been? What should a person expect as far as fishing, and what should a person be looking for in a charter boat?

Not sure which Island you are going? I went a couple of years ago in Maui and could tell you about that trip if you like. I would suggest going to tripadvisor.com and search under the island you are going and ask there. For example, if you are going to Maui search under "Maui forums" or Hawaii forums and then either do another search under the island asking about big game fishing or start a thread and someone will respond.

I was out in Kona last July. See picture.

I would highly recommend going to Kona. You can catch blue marlin right out of the marina. I would check with the charter captain as far as the best time for the species you are interested in.

I fished for three days with three different captains and caught this fish with Captain Jeff Rogers. With the other captains not a bite.

If you don't go out with him he will recommend the best captain for the species of fish you are after. I would at least swap e-mails with him and he will get you headed in the right direction.

If you want to increase your chances go during the middle of July to the end of July. Works most years. Also keep your line tight. When we were fishing we saw several hits and then the angler flubbed it up. You might only get one chance. Make the most of it!

Kona is only about 20 minutes away. You could fly in in the morning and fly out after the guided trip.

Fish more hours to increase your chances. Choose a boat that has shade.

If you get a Marlin on it is a total adrenaline rush. This one jumped out of the water after hooked and did a tail dance fairly close to the boat.

I don't know much about the guides in Maui, even though I have gone by their booths a number of times. I usually go to Maui to play and to Kona to fish.

A great place to go & many things to catch. Much info on line re: Kona. Feb/March is excellent for observing whales also. The submarine excursions are great. You'll learn about colors & light penetration real time. Take more money $$ than you think. There are so many things to experience & you can't get their so easily. I can't wait to go back.

I've fished out of Maui 2x, once we rode around for afternoon which became dreadfully boring. The other time we ran out to a buoy/crib, caught a couple mahi mahi THEN spent the rest of the day riding around to no avail!!! also tried Kauai w/ same results. We're there in late Feb. and I know the best fishing is around summer time. Lots of charters to pick on Maui. Very expensive though!! Some day I will get a sailfish of some sort!!! Merry Christmas, Dennis
