It is well known that bass can be caught on the instinct bite, but not much has been discussed about the walleye instinct bite. The scenario is; You pull up on a spot that has been consistantly producing lots of fish and when you show up, they are locked up and not biting. Can a person use the instinct bite to get them to bite? Yes, and it can be very productive. There are many approaches to the instinct bite, it's knowing what techniques to use and when. Is anybody willing to share what they know about the instinct bite techniques?

If your term instinct bite means the same as a reaction bite - I live n' die by speed trolling for shallow active eyez between 3-5 sog & sometimes higher... on a good hot-bite day pattern I have c n' r numbers over 100+, while searchin' for a sUMo Momma to weigh & then also c n' r...

Here on the Mississippi (pools 7,8,&9), I rely on the "Instinct Bite" a lot in the summer. I catch a lot of my fish trolling cranks over 2.5MPH. Sometimes they just won't hit unless they have to make that decision instantly.

I think the "Instinct" part of Walleye fishing comes more from how opprotunistic of feeders they are. I don't really think they're biting because they are protecting their areas as much. However, I have had Walleyes bite Willow Cats completely in half before. Many people say that they hit them so hard because they hate them for eating their eggs. That could be classified as an instinct bite.

Looks like the fishermen are locked up as much as the walleye ;-)
