If you want a really warm hat to keep the old bean warm when out in the cold and blowing snow of ice fishing or a fast run across the freezing lake in the spring or fall, check out these very ugly us army helmet liners:

On a lark, I picked up one of these on e-bay from a supplier for the grand cost of $1 plus $3 shipping.

I find that this has become my favorite hat for working outdoors and fishing due to its warmth, compct size, ability to keep the wind and rain off my head.

They don't win a beauty contest, but they sure work well to keep the head warm when you need it most.

If nothing else, they work great to keep in the trunk of your vehicle for extreme weather emergency gear.

They really do work very well to keep the head warm. The very long flap may be used to cover the entire neck and chin to keep warm, or if flipped up and over the heand and fastened, is still warm enough to keep the bulk of your ears warm with nothing under your chin.

Take care

Ugly to say the least but like you say, if need be, very handy. I carry one in my emergency bag of goodies while traveling in the winter here in ND. It actually was my military issue back in the days '73-76. I have tried it on a few times and never actually put it to use since the service but it is always available in my "storm" bag.

I do remember the cold days stationed down in Kansas and in ROK during field trips, we used them lots.

A steal at that price.

REW:
Did you get that back when you lived near Havre, MT?
They still wear them up there....on the west end of the Hi-Line.

T-mac,
Actually I grew up in the Havre area and married a girl from Chester.

No, I actually picked up the liner on E-bay, but I have to admit it that I like the way that it keeps my head warm.

Earlier this year, we came through Townsend on our way north. We spent a few days at Canyon Ferry fishing. We were camping in Magpie bay which is the very spot that I learned to fish. After marrying my wife, we spent a summer weekend with her grandparents. Her grandmother was a great fisherperson and really taughte me how to catch the fish.

Been using them for years. 90% of my outdoor gear was army issue. Cheep an very durable. Jacket an pant's w/liner's on top of their extreme cold weater john's will keep you as warm as toast. Who care's what it looks like.
