I grew up in the Detroit River area and handlined with my father and grandfather for years. My question is woudnt it be an effective way to fish for eyes in the shallows such as Cleveland area in spring and fall? Why dont you see more people doing it?
Thanks Chad

there's a few die-hard long time handliners in the Downriver Walleye Assoc. that handline areas of erie alot after the bite dies abit in the summer in the detroit river. works for them... i prefer to troll out in the lake.

Why would you possibly want to handline in the lake?

I have done it but not much.

since you are allowed 2 lines (in Mich) I would rather troll 2 lines and get at least 1 away from the boat.

I just think it may add a nice variety and I could teach my son something new. It may also pan out to be a productive method?

some of the old time handliners WON'T do anything but handline..that's why. they won't buy any new equipment or try anything new.. it works for them so why change...

SHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!! DOH! :banghead: LOL

No, seriously, I'm just teasing. ;)

I think the reason you don't see a lot of people doing it, is because up until the last 5 years or so, handlining was a Detroit River "secret". You didn't see anyone handlining rivers, anywhere in the United States, outside of the Detroit and St. Claire Rivers.
With the Pro/Am circuits visiting other river systems, some of the old school Pros, who fished the Detroit River often, incorporated the use of handlining and polelining into their tournament angling arsenal, and did quite well. They have been teaching others how to do it since then, through articles in magazines, and through the internet message boards, like this one.

Its popularity is still growing, and more and more people are learning how to do it all the time.

It's one of my favorite ways to fish too! :raisin:

Before my Dad passed away he used to handline up on a inland lake here in northern Michigan(Burt lake)all the time and would out fish most people using traditional methods. One thing for sure you never seen anybody else out there doing it. But, he loved to do it, and it supplied many walleye dinners!!

Another reason may be??? (I may be mistaken so check it out?) I think you are allowed only 3 hooks per line (not 3 baits)in Ohio waters. This would mean if you run two presentations, one could have two hooks and the other only one.......... Just a thought??? Paul

What is handlining? How is it applied to walleye fishing? Any help would be appreciated.

two good articles. basicly it's a river technique that will position your bait at or very near the bottom at all times.

Most of the time in the spring and fall on Erie we are targeting the upper 10-12 foot of water so for that reason alone handlining would not be an effective presentation.
