Have been doing fly-ins in Canada for years but not anymore. Can anybody make any recomendations on resorts and quality of Walleye and smallmouth fishing on Vermillion in June.
Thanks

The end of May and early June is my favorite time to be on Vermilion. What are you looking for in a resort? Would you ever look at a private cabin?
We seem to alternate every other year going to a resort vs a cabin. I have had good luck with both.
Dave,
I would consider a private cabin since on our fly-in trips we are in a secluded cabin. What part of the lake?

Tower or east end, we plan to be in McKinley Park campground June 9-16. You might hire a guide your first day, I'd recommend Cliff Wagenbach.

I definately prefer to stay near Big Bay.
If you want somewhere kind of quiet and cheap, Daisy Bay is nice.
If you want somewhere quiet, nice and more expensive, Everetts Bay is good.
If you like to have a busy bar and restaurant at the resort, Bay View is the place.
We have stayed at Trancheffs and Uncle Tom's Cabin (now called Eagle Ridge). Trancheffs was clean and decent, no complaints, but nothing great. Eagle Ridge was very nice w/ a full basement for wet clothes (and sauna), boat lift, well stocked, satalight dish, fire pit and really great views. Both are in a great location for accessing the entire east end of the lake.
www.lakevermilion.com is a great resource for info on resorts or other private cabins.
Just wondering, as long as you're going that far, why not continue on to Lake of the Woods??
Good Luck,

How far do you think Vermilion is? If I dont stop I can get there in 3 hours from St Paul. It takes me over 5 hours to get to LOTW.
We stayed at Fortune Bay for 3 nights in November and it was a great spot. Good food, gambing for the wife, 18 hole golf course and a nice looking marina. the golf course and marina were closed but the front desk told me I could rent a 16 foot boat with a 30 hp motor for $50 a day. this isn't out of line for the rental fees charged by resorts up in our neck of the woods (Red Lake).

Been to Vermillion several times, caught some fine (BIG) smallmouth and crappie, buddy trolled up some big northerns, we caught walleye fishing for smallmouth using 4" Slider Worms. Used to live in East Bethel, MN., but from the Ozarks.
I would heavily recommend Ludlow's Island Resort, 5 star. They have several OUTSTANDING cabins of various sizes on the island and on the shore on each side of the narrows. Fine folks to deal with, first class. They have boats, bait, covered slips, dockboys clean your fish and either freeze them or deliver them to your cabin. Plenty for kids to do if you take them along. Things to do in the area if you burn out on fishing (I never have, but it COULD happen), golf, places to eat, etc.
Check out their website -

You WILL NOT be disappointed.

Cook end is my favorite because it has so many small bays that are less affected by wind. Head O Lkaes resort is nice. We have spent many weeks on the lake in early June and the Walleye fishing can be excellent. Good crappie lake as well.
