Is this the year the Michigan Walleye record will fall? Three nights ago a 16 plus pound eye was taken on the Muskegon River not far from my home. The lucky angler was casting cranks from shore at night.

Due to the warmer than usual weather in our area this winter I believe that anglers will have more than a fair shot at big fish before the season closes March 15 this year. We've been trolling on Muskegon Lake for weeks in our boats, and having plenty of action!

Remember it takes time for these fish to get this size, so release them if you can to continue the sport for others. If you want to keep a fish for eating the smaller ones are better table fare in my opinion.
Good Luck, and tight lines!

Thanks for sticking in catch and release Keith!...We all know the fishery is pretty vulnerable at this time of year! The MDNR was at the SBWC meeting on 2-17 and some passionate CO's are starting a volunteer Walleye Watch program...We all need to join in this program...If you see someone snagging, pick up your cell phone...let people know you won't put up with it! When you see that Yar-Craft with the Yammies on the river...Snaggers beware...Hope you stick that 17.52 Keith! Anyone have questions about the walleye watch program email me at saker@tir.com.....Mark

keith, have you ever went down the thornapple launch by newaygo to see the walleyes the dnr shocks to get the eggs from ? before i transfered to saginaw plant with gm, i lived in the hardy dam area and spent a lot of time on the river there and was really shocked at the size of the walleyes that would come up the river there, most years there would be walleyes that would break the record coming up to spawn, just nobody gets them on for some reason. worth going down to see and usally the dnr will tell ya the dates when they will be doing the shocking. worth the trip to see. tight lines. mike/hammertime

I caught a lot of big walleye at the dam (croton) while fishing for steelies, but had to let them go. Season was closed. Salmon eggs are great spring walleye bait.

I have seen the shock boat on the river in years past, but that was when I was a, hate to say this, Steelhead guide, and never payed much attention to them. It would probably send me into shock to see all those big eyes! LOL

Like I posted earlier it's just that this year we have the warmer weather, and the fish are more available than ever before.

It's up to all of us to make sure the resource is around for future generations. Since the fishery belongs to all of us we must all share the responsibility of protecting it.
Good Luck to all of you!
