I am seeking some advice on hydro-troll units for trolling speed control. Any experience with these units out there? I have trouble trolling down to under 2.2mph with my Johnson 4-stroke 70 HP. The Hydro-Troll appears to be a solution. All cooments greatly appreciated.

The happy troller makes the best unit on the market in my opinion, I was not happy with the "hydro troll" from Cabelas. Unless your willing to spend some serious cash, then check out the Riveara (SP?)

Eyejacker,

Be aware that a trolling plate substantially reduces your steering control and drift becomes a problem especially in wind. (and who hasn't had wind)

If I may - buy 2 good drift socks that are adjustable for resistance and tie them to the transom on either side and straight back. This works well and is a lot less expensive. Besides, if you drift-fish they can be used for that as well.

Have had the larger size Hydro Troll on my boat for 2 years now. I can troll at speeds with this unit to adapt to any conditions. Only problem I have ever had is forgetting to put back to up position before heading in, in that situation the shear pin breaks and must be replaced before you can troll with it again. Does not affect running. My advice get extra shear keys, takes 2 minutes to change on land, difficult to do on the water though. I troll with a 165HP IO. Much easier than pulling bags, what I used to do. Good luck.
