Yes they are, especially if you pick one up on eBay in the $155 range. However, if you're on a budget you might want to take a look at the Shimano Citica.

They are pretty bullet proof. I have had one for over 10 years without a problem.

For bottom bouncing I use an low profile Abu Garcia which has a nice flipping switch
