To all of you who are working, in any job, it's better than not. Down here in northwest Indiana the steel industry is dying. Everybody wants the cheap stuff from across the water made by companies that don't have to worry about United States pollution laws, paying benefits for retirees, and most likely are located in countries that have government paid healthcare. I had the misfortune of working for LTV, which went belly up. Job ended Jan 31st after one month short of 22 years. Now I'm not complaining. The next job will come along. You'd think with the time on my hands I'd be fishing. No mon, no fun. Wealth needs to be created in America. It doesn't come from the gambling boats along our lake shore. My brother also works for a steel company, National, owned by NKK, and also losing money. NKK wants to unload it to US Steel. Maybe with a little consolidation, things will pick up. I'm kinda glad, at least, that walleye boats are made in America. If I still had my job I might be getting the next boat. Instead, the old one will have to do. I was a process engineer. Maybe will be again. In the meantime, we have two boys at home and two foster daughters. In spite of presently not having a job, life is good and the 'eyes are just waiting to be caught here in the next couple months. At least my boat numbers are current.

If you don't mind relocation, you could try Northstar Steel Mill in Delta, Ohio(NW)They have been doing pretty good all winter, I have a good friend who works there............

Hey, I appreciate the concern. It is a little too early for that just yet. The nw IN facility is being auctioned off next Wed. I might get called back by the new owner. Here's hoping. No four weeks of vacation like before, but it would mean no relocation. Gotta ride it out for a week or two more.

I feel your pain. I am a mechanical engineer who has been laid off since right after Thanksgiving. It's not easy, that's for sure. My main concern is when the ol' unemployment runs out. I'm young (only 25) and am a bit over my head without an income. I have already committed to seven tournaments and have no prospects of employment. Good luck to all those who are in similar situations.

Rod Holder,

I give you my best, I'm sure it's a tough situation. I will say that I believe things happen for a reason and with a positive attitude things will work out to your advantage, best of luck! A year from now you'll probably say this was one of the best things that could have happened for you and your family.

Rod holder,

Good luck in your searches. As you know, nowadays you've got plenty of company. It is no fun being unemployed no matter who you are or what you do/did for a living. As the others mentioned, use this as time to reflect on the important things...family, friends and good health. Take a look at what you can do without (cell phone, cable TV, eating out, etc.) and you'll be surprised how you will lessen the stress in your life as well as reduce monthly bills. If you haven't already, use the time to start a routine exercise plan, like walking or jogging (all you need are a pair of sneaks). Most of all maintain the faith that good things come to those who wait. After 22 years of hard work some good karma is sure to come your way. Best of luck, Jim.
