I just bought two new trolling rods and 10# fireline crystal. I was wondering what is the best way to spool them?? I have heard of using mono as a backer, is it necessary?? What is the best way to spool them??

I never use backing with the superbraids. Give the reel spool a few wraps of electrical tape (sticky side out) first, the spool on the fireline.

It's much cheaper to fill them 1/2 way with some old heavy Mono and then complete filling with your chosen Superbraid. If you want to fill all the way with SUPERSTUFF, make sure that you wrap the bottom of the spool with some tape (or something!) that will give something for the suprebraid to grab on so that it does not slip and spin around on your spool. Believe me, there are an awful lot of us here that didn't know that and found out about it the hard way.
Hard way: "You'll have a HUGE fish pulling out line on you and you can't seem to gain on him. You tighten the drag and start winding again. You look down at the spool after you have tightened the drag twice and can plainly see it free-wheeling the opposite way. You'll instantly understand why we preach this to everyone now." You don't want to join this club! LOLOL. Fighting that fish in by hand-over-handing the line absolutely sucks. Pray that it isn't a King Salmon on Lake Michigan when it happens.

i think i was one of the founding members of that club, unfortunately. now I use mono backing on all my superbraid reels. I then use an albright knot to connect the braid. i also coat the connection with "zap-a-gap" aka high build superglue. makes a super small knot and very strong.
Since you have 2 reels, this is what I'd do.
I want my spools full - so take 1 reel, put the fireline on, then tie on Mono, and fill the spool. Now, to get the mono to be the backer, just take your other reel, and transfer the line to the other reel. Now the Mono is the backer, and your Fireline is on a full spool.
When doing this, keep track on your line counter how much mono you need as backing material to end up with a full spool, and duplicate on your 2nd reel by putting the mono on first.
I believe having the spool full results in a more accurate line counter, and better performing drag - because the spool is filled. I'll suggest marking off 100 ft in your backyard and testing your line counter so you know what the error is in counter to actual feet. Full spool will be closer. Regardless, you WILL want both setups to be identical. That way, if the number 85 is working, you can duplicate it with another rod. Even if the number 85 on your line counter is something else in 'feet'.

buy some cheap mono and put a mono backing on before you spool with the fire line.

I just got this tip the other day. Set your line counter at "000" and completely fill the spool. The counter will start counting backwards (999, 998, 997, ...). Most likely you will pass "000" (1000') again while your spooling. Record the number on the line counter when the reel is full and subtract that from 1000. You want to get an accurate reading of how much line it takes to fill the reel. Reset your line counter to "000" and remove 400' of line. Write this number down! This is the amount of backing you want to add to the other line counter(s). Now add 400' of your Fireline and you're done. It may take a little more Fireline to fill the spool due to the line diameter difference.
For example, if it takes 1300' (past "000" and stop at "700") to completely fill your spool. Remove 400' leaving 900' of backing. Add 400' of Fireline and you're done. The next reel gets 900' of backing and 400' of Fireline.
The next time you need to re-spool just remove the Fireline down to the backing and add 400' back onto the reel. This is an accurate way of making certain you have the same amount of line spooled on each reel. This will make the reels very close to identical which is critical when trying to duplicate what's working.

If you run Diawa 27 line counter's run 600 feet per spool of 10lb Cabelas Pro line backing (cheap works great) and a standard spool (125 yard spool of fire line). That way every thing is even and it is real easy to respool with new fire line buy just adding a small spool.
I used the new fire line crystal and boy I love that stuff, from deep trolling cranks with 10/4. To jigging 6/2, to ice fishing 1/.25. I landed a couple of 4 to 5 lb bass on the 1/.25 fire line ice fishing the stuff is way stonger that 1lb test and I am thinking of using that super thin line for walleye jigging this spring 1/.25

I use Diawa SG 47s a lot, I also have an older AD 47 which I used to load the better reels as Burr suggested. Load up the AD 47 backwards then run it off on the Sealine. This way you can use any combination of lines.
