nothing beats a quality balance beam. i have a couple digital units but let the beam show me which one to toss... on those rare occasions. lots of ways to put a mark on fish... clip on colored weights/colored yarn on a alligator clip etc. cheap long colored tye wraps that don't hurt the fish thru the mouth out the gill plate and just cut before release (NEVER tightened)...etc there are alot of ways besides the ones sold. the the beam tells all.

Just be sure to check that culling is legal in your state. I know that it is not in NY
I second the balance beam for culling fish. Works great, no electronics to break, dead batteries, or weak springs....
I case some don't understand... in a tournament situation you keep every legal fish until you catch the number to be entered. At that point it's the smallest fish that you want to replace, cull or upgrade. So when you catch the next fish, if it happens to be close to the size of the smallest, you use the balance beam to determine which to release. So even though you don't know what any of the fish weigh, you know you are entering your heaviest fish.

Get 10 shower curtain hooks. Put a # on each of them 1-10 or preferably make each one a different color. Then weigh each fish as you catch them and record the weight. Discard the smallest.

I took the "hooks" off and use clips so as to not puncture the fish. I have used this in many different tournaments with good success and no harm to the fish. I use alligator type clips from Menards.
