Handheld VHF for base

I need to buy a radio for a "camp" base unit. What radio would you buy and why. ??

P.S. I know there was a post a couple of months ago but I could not find it.

It is my understanding that unless you have a FCC license that you can not use VHF radios for land based operation by law. If you've got that covered, I have a Uniden that I give fishing buddies when we go out and it works very well. I think it was around $150 at Cabelas, but don't have the model # handy.

If you want to have very much range (over 3 - 5 miles) none of the handhelds will do the job.

Thats also my experience. If you want range you need more watts of power and more antenna.
