Being so new to this computer world,I'm probably asking a dumb, uninformed question that has been hashed over many times but...Why do most WC users have an alias? Is there a reason I'm missing? Just curious. I like to interact whenever I can in an informative way, I hope, but it would be nice to know, later on, in another venue, who I have visited with, while on WC. Don't change on my account...I just have nose trouble, that's all.
Keep a tight line...

I think its for a few reasons, Steve. One, it is kind of a custom in the computer world to give yourself a nickname, mosty likley started in chat rooms and for email addresses when you dont want to reveal your real name, but you still want people to remember you.
Then you have another reason. I am a perfect example. I used it once when I posted because I thought it was a stupid name, I was trying to be funny. I even tried to start using my real name, but it perchjerker stuck. So now I just live with it! I am registered and have a profile with my real name if anyone cares to look.
Da Bears
02-23-2002, 01:13 PM
Good question. Not sure how to answer that. My real name is Mike Nakroshis, but I use 'Da Bears' because I am a big bears fan! I guess I just do it because I have signed my real name for 28 years, and using an alias is a nice change of pace. Whatever you choose to use is A-OK!
Good Fishing,

02-23-2002, 01:15 PM
Hey Steve. The name is Tom Gustar. See you in Port Clinton. The reason I use Targa2 is because when I bought mine there were only two in Canada.Very small market for walleye boats up here, especially fiberglass.

Steve,
You make a good point. I suppose I picked an alias because it was quick and easy to type. I am Mike Evenson and if I just used Mike, there are about a billion and a half of us with that name. It simply is to add a little character. Common names are a little boring and actually, I find it easier to remember who I am chatting with whether it be Aquaman, Perchjerker, REW, JulsWi, SteveCO, BackwaterEddy....
Those are just a few of many of the people that are very common to this site. I have never hid behind my name, just use it for character and speed.
Hans actually changed his name to BlackSilver and I have a hard time following the two as the same person. I get confused when people change their handles...
By the way, has anyone figured out if Cisco ever came back here to WC and if so, what his new name is?
Jim Randash
02-23-2002, 02:45 PM
Steve Fellegy, did you catch any fish this year or did you have to pick them up at the fish market? Just wanted to let you know some of us old timers use your real name.
MR. Randash! You know how to run one of these things too? You ask if I caught any fish this year? Heck no! I'm always on this dog-on thing...and it's got me into all kinds of trouble.lol lol Call me sometime Jim, I might learn somethin'. lol

Bill Daniels here. Guess I arrived here with this handle because that is my CB handle. E-mail address is fishermn@netins.net. Kinda stuck with it now. Just wish I was as knowledgeable as a lot of you on W.C. A guy sure can learn a lot on W.C.; can find almost any answer by going back in the archives...

many many moons ago my kids got me started on "the net".
the "standard" was to have a screen name...never use your "real" name! (screen names were usually one word). mine came from what they called me at work, which came about from something that happened...anyway...real name: thomas ebi...95% of anyone who trys to say my last name gets it wrong....even my screen name pronounces the "ebi" wrong...never bothered me, gave up trying to correct people a long long time ago. after running the chatroom for a long time (not the "chatman" anymore), folks i lined up to host got confused with me being the "chatman" (scott gave me that title)in the chatroom and not "ebijack". they knew me as "ebijack" from all the e-mails back and forth and i had to use "ebijack" over the phone also to get reconized. (i know ralph knows what i'm talkin about). a screen name is easier to remember than someones real name, for the most part.
but it is a real bear when meeting up with WC'ers and trying to remember real names to go with the screen names.

I don't consider mine an alias...I've been called "Juls" since I was born. Whether on here, or in person, friends call me Juls.
Although, I will have to change it to Juls_OH now instead of Juls_WI..;-) It will just take some time since I'm registered under the old one, and it would take some doing on Golden's part to change it.

I do the handle thing because when I started visiting WC a few years ago I thought it was cool that alot of people tried to include some part of the word Walleye in their handle. I include the WA (WA State) to show what part of the country I live in, although I think some people confuse it because it is the same letters that begin the word "Walleye". Oh well, I am covered on both ends I guess. I like the handles and think they help distinguish people better. The stranger the handle, the easier to remember for me. We should have a poll on the best and strangest handle!

My handle is a nickname given to me because I've had grey hair since I was just out of high school. As you know, you don't get to pick your own nicknames, so I’m 30 and everyone calls me Grampa.
I do, however always finish my posts with my full name.

Steve,
I use this nickname because I am an old guy that moved to
Minnesota from Wisconsin and I have fun joking with all the
Viking fans that are my neighbors at an RV park and Marina on
the S.E. shore of Mille Lacs.
I appreciate your answering my post a few days ago about a Lund

forward to spring.
I enjoy reading your posts on this board, please keep up the good
work.

smiley
02-23-2002, 05:45 PM
My name is Lisa but I was called smiley when I was growing up. I like the nickname because I try to be smiley as much as I can. Some also call me "legs" because I am VERY tall but I don't like that one so much! My hubby's name is Bob and he goes by eyellaw because it's walleye spelled backwards and walleye's pretty much consume his life.
Why do we use nicknames? Well, they are fun and some are clever and it might get boring if everyone used their "regular" names.

02-23-2002, 06:03 PM
I have been using my nickname since I was 14 when my grandfather gave it to me. He always told everybody that whenever we went fishing the fish rarley got off my hook. The next time we went out fishing he said another fish stung by the stinger. Unfortunatly he died awhile ago but i will always have the memories and the nickname of Stinger.
Take care

Steve,
I am now from Oregon and the first name is Dan. I doubt if you remember me as I fished with you as an amateur in 1993 at the PWT at Oahe. we fished the 3rd day together, my good friend Kent fished with you the 2nd day. Sealoff won it pulling plugs off the points, and I ended up 5th on the am side.
Good to have your input hear on the WC!

Hey Dan! How could I forget that day as we were fishing for angler of the year on the final day. I think if I remember right, Seelhoff, caught the winning fish(7 lb.er) on a minnow rig about 30 feet from us while fishing a small hump we were on FIRST. Long boat ride that day too. Maybe 45 miles? Okay...I am remembering the right day Dan?
If so, it could have been better for us. Parsons beat me for angler of the year by an 18" fish. Still haunts me!
Take care Dan!

02-23-2002, 08:19 PM
My name is Butch Tomoson,I'm from nebraska and picked this handle two or three years ago when my son introduced me to w.c. I pull ripsticks and thought that would be a good screen name.I left out the 'c'because I was new to the net and didn't want to get into trouble with the reef runner company. At the time I thought everyone was supposed to use a handle.
I came up with this name, cause I needed something, and I didn't want to use my real name at the time I first started posting a few years ago. I'd happily switch to my real name, but I don't think many would know who the heck I am if I did. The only other nickname I've ever been given is jesus, and I didn't think that would be appropriate. :) Those that know me might understand why I got stuck with the jesus name...

"tj1n" well, 8 years ago when I bought this PC the first thing I had to do was create a login name.......hmmmm thought I better have one that I could remember. My name is Travis Joritz, so I tried TJ and obviously that had been used...after many attempts finally I had to use tj1n before my account would accept my login name. Now 8 years later I'm still using this name and continue trying to think of something creative for what the heck the "1n" might stand for??? Anyhow, not that I don't want you to know me just always been TJ1N.
Good post Steve~

Dutchman
02-24-2002, 05:02 AM
Mine is just a nickname, started out with something like that crazy Dutchman. Mostly because I'll fish no matter what the weather was, when I was quite a bit younger I'd do it out of a 14' Lund with a 4 horse Johnson. Never got sunk but I could sure bail and drive at the same time. My name Is Jeff Den Herder.

This may sound silly, but I've had family members perform extended web searches looking for our surname. My surname is very uncommon and any hits they would get would most likely be people related to us. I guess they just wanted to see how many hits they would get, who these people are, what sites they are visiting, and what they are talking about. Well, they got a few hits on some posts I had signed my last name to on a couple different web sites. Nothing vulgar or pornographic mind you, but they thought it would be funny to start discussing my posts at the dinner table without me knowing what they were up to. Sometimes we all just want a little privacy.

02-25-2002, 05:47 AM
Great thread Steve. Eye Doctor was bestowed upon me over 15 years ago when my friends realized that walleye was always my target species and I always seemed to catch more than they did. It came as a take off from Doug Hannon's "the Bass Professor". I shortened it to eyedoktr over the years so I could use it as a handle on the net. A couple of fishing publications did articles on the "eye doctors" of New York a few years ago and I was one of the lucky ones to be interviewed, the name just stuck.

02-25-2002, 11:30 AM
Steve, I found out about this site about four board updates ago. Just about everyone here posted under an anonymous name. They all had these realy cool names so I thought for a day or so about what mine could be. What do I drive, use, or do well; no, Super well to stick as my handle. The pressure to get the handle right was immense because this was going to be my label forever! I am a much better troller from my experience with Lake Mi. fishing for salmon and trout so I was looking for something with that. I also enjoy and am fairly adept at trolling for walleye so I became the "SUPERTROLLER". I have never hidden my identity. Anyone that asks is told right up front who I am and where I'm from so even though it's not my real name on the screen everyone that matters knows who I am.

GOOD QUESTION. i for one don't use my actual name because i am not on this site trying to solicit sponsorships, not trying to run a popularity contest, not trying to undo any damage that i have done in the past with sponsors or the fishing public or any other political or monetary agenda. my agenda is simple. sharing information with a great bunch of folks that have like interests. i really enjoy the fact that i can be as honest as i want without being personally scrutinized. simple. this is a great place to share your real name if you want to or not. sometimes the sucking noise gets a little loud when real names are used. honestly, this is my reason for staying anonymous.
good question, have a good day and thanks for all of your good postings. even us anonymous anglers enjoy the walleye central site very much.

Steve, this was definitely a good post. I did get the pleasure to meet you in Ortonville about three years ago. I believe you were just getting back from a tourney in Mobridge where you took seventh place.
My nickname came from being stupid in highschool and trying to come up with a cool name. So I took the initials from my name.
D ennis R ussell Howes and hence I came up with DRHOWES. I always tried to fool myself that I was the doctor of love, but do to my inherent ability to find parties and alcohol my friends found the only thing I could cure.

Mike or Hawgeye,
You wouldn't happen to be from Eveleth, MN would you?
Yes, Jack, I do know Merrill Honnold. As a matter a fact, I hunt in the same woods he does. He just retired this year and lives in Wahkon, which is on the south shores of Mille Lacs. He moved here full time from Rochester, Mn. The Honnold family, his uncles and dad, lived within a mile of our place for many years. Merrill's dad helped teach me how to make maple syrup when I was knee high to a grasshopper. I watched his dad row out from the old Honnold place one morning and cast for northerns....an hour later he went in with a 22 lber., a 19 lber. and 17 lber. No landing net. A zebco 33 with 8lb. test and a red-eyed wiggler. He did it many times over the yeasrs.

Yep he's the one. I have been in contact and to his place on Wahkon Bay a number of times! Was supposed to go up there for some ice fishing, however, tax season and wife's operation have kept me pretty close to the home fires. Smokey actually retired from the Social Security Administration a couple of years ago and lived in Rochester for a short while. I have heard him talk of you on ocassion...all good :) I have been in that piece of woods myself last year! I think we are talking the same one.
Thanks for the reply,

Steve(CO)
02-25-2002, 04:00 PM
I think it is just for fun. I use Steve(CO) simply to identify me from any Steves in other states. I have used other handles in the past like Browntrout, but wouldn't dare use that on a walleye website; especially with guys putting up statements like "Friends don't let friends fish for trout" and fish references like "slimers." Actually, it is a lot easier to remember people who use a unique alias rather than if we all used real names.
I go by "Box" in my work life, my computer life, my play life... everybody but my Mom, and Dad and brother (since they are also called Box), calls me Box. My last name is Boxmeyer... and I'm shaped kinda funny... :)
