It might be early but to those having a combo of cabin/spring fever, and to those who like me hate putting on products containing DEET, you might try GREEN BAN, I find it works great,.doesn't evaporate like DEET and you don't feel poisoned if its on your skin (a number of people do) smells better and works very well for mosquito, deer and horse flies. I don't think it works for black flies/gnats or green heads though but I don't think DEET products do either,..anyway for my 2 cents,..
Just finished reading all of your post and reguarding those blood sucking knats, Skin So Soft from Avon is the best and possible only thing that works.
I've heard about a repellant that uses "catnip" that is supposed to be better in all ways. Don't know if it is on the market yet.

If you have a freind who sells Amway their bug repellant called D15 is very effective.Just don't fall for that "would you like that at wholesale routine".lol
Heres what we used at Paris Island...(not recruits). Tha sand flees there are like gnats and skiters on steroids and will eat your but alive.
Mix skin so soft with plain old listerine. Works great!

Targa, I think the Amway product IS,. DEET based,....hard to discribe but I just don't feel well after DEET based stuff is applied,..after asking a few friends that said they didn't think it bothered them,..later ,..after they tuned into it,..they said the same thing..(I don't "think" it was "suggestion" based)Anyway I know NYS has banned certain concentations of DEET to use on children from reports of very bad reactions.
Catnip? never heard of it for this? Do you know who sells it?
Jess,..well I guess that sickening sweet smell of the Skin So Soft is better than black flies so I will try it with Listerine,.SSS ,.by itself,..I wasn't that impressed with...but maybe the combo works better,...I think you forget each year what anquish is re: the gnats until you are into them again,..the only thing I've found so far was a hat with a net and long sleeves etc,..not great on hot days though,...I read somewhere that Oil of Beramont works,..have yet to try it.
An hebalist not far from here also has a good product she assures is non toxic and (she says) repels many bugs uncluding ticks,...I know it works for mosquitos/horse/deerflies but it DOESN'T work for blackfles/gnats,..I smells good though,..like lemons,..I'm not sure if her product is as good or better than Green Ban,..but the GB is a bit EZer to come by as I can get it at local stores instead of mail order from her,..I have used DEET in the past and have seen the blackflies bite rt through the still glistening layer!,..Anyone find anythinf effective angainst Green heads (do you have em where you are,..these look like reg house flies but w/green head and when they bite,..yikes!

Walleyes can detect deet concentrations as small as 2 parts per million - I don't let it any where near my boat or gear. Head nets and long sleeve shirts are the only safe way to ensure walleye don't detect unsafe or undesirable scents on your baits. Well, they might like vanilla wich repels gnats - anyone have any sucsess with vanilla as a repellant??
forgive me if this was concidered but the amount of deet has not been mentioned. I have found that the low percentage deet doesn't work. I believe you need 40% or better for it to work effectively. One must read the % of Deet. The only sprays that have worked for me were the 100% Deet squirt bottles and the real strong muskol. I think it was over 46 % Deet and it will gag the heck out of ya but it works ok. The 100 % deet doesn't smell hardly at all (to me) and seems to work pretty good. Aside from this skin so soft dose work. Mixed with the listerine it is a little thinner and not as greasy. I think maybe the alcohol fumes or something helps as well. Its best mixed in a spray bottle.
good luck,
Jess
Absolutely, 100percent right Gerry. But why did you have to tell everyone? lol
