For those who walleye fish there, do you ever hook onto an Atlantic salmon? I understand they were introduced there and I wondered if they were doing well. I don't know how they compete with Coho,King, steelheads etc.

I fish the central basin out of Ashtabula. Atlantic salmon in Erie is news to me. I haven't heard that they were introduced. I get plenty of steelhead and a few coho every year. I've talked to guys who have gotten lakers and browns but nobody ever mentiones Atlantic. Maybe out of western NY.

Ah Astabula!,...the first time I saw any of the Great Lakes was a foggy morning in Astabula,...driving to college back in the ole days it was about as far as I could get in my old very slow VW.(and I liked the name.) Stayed at the same motel there nearly every trip to Iowa...drove to the shore there and could only see about 200 feet but felt a satisfaction anyway.
Arrrgggh!, I also have my great lakes reversed,...it's Ontario,...sorry but its interesting that it hasn't been done/tried. (I'm NOT sure if its always a good idea to introduce every fish that can be,)..but I understand Coho were introduced because they could take the polution of the 60s whereas Atlantics prob couldn't, but now they prob could. I would give the edge of hooking an Atlantic over a Coho or Steelie but thats just my opinion.

I am not a salmon guy but I have seen some Kings taken out of Lake Erie. There a few that come up the rivers and creeks of the Western Basin of the Lake in the fall. I have also seen them caught during the summer on the central basin(Canada side). The biggest I have seen is around 22 lbs.

Is whats known as a King the same as an Atlantic?

Tom, I thinkwhat people call Kings are Chinooks,..they fight like you are hooked on a freight train,..but IMO Atlantics fight harder pound for pound,..at least the sea runs anyway...
