View Full Version : Northern MN
I have to work in Minneapolis the week of Memorial Day. I am going to drive (from Atlanta) with my boat and head to Northern Minnesota the following week camping/ fishing. Any suggestions on camp grounds? I was looking at either Moose or Pimushe Lake campgrounds and fishing those lakes as well as Kitchi, Cass and Big Lakes if time permits. Looking mostly for walleye. Any advise would be appreciated. I'll be fishing by myself if any non-boat owners want to go out for a day or two.

Ok, Pimusche ( or how ever the heck it's spelled) is more of a panfish/bass lake. Hit Kitchie prime time early and late. Work on Cass during the day and don't be afraid to go deep there. Shiners are hard to keep alive and expensive, but worth the money and effort. The best pre fishing is a drive around to the fish cleaning shacks at the resorts up there around sun set. Bring beer and you will make friends fast. - lol.

Not sure what kind of camping you have in mind but there are a couple of campgrounds on Cut Foot Souix which is attached to Big Winnie. Its nice because if Winnie is to rough you can always fish Cutfoot or Little Cutfoot. Also a lot of lakes close by and easy to trailer to from there like Jessie,Bowstring,Round,Sand. There are a number of resorts on Cutfoot so if you need bait they can usually help you out. Check out the fishing reports on-line for Winnie or stop at a few bait shops in Grand Rapids and Deer River, they usually can get you headed in the right direction. Good Luck, Jim

I'd recommend Bowens on Winnie/Cutfoot Sioux.

I agreee with others. If your in that area and want to target eyes go with the biggest baddest water. Winni is it in that area. The cut foot national campgrounds looks cool. Very scenic. Just launched out of there a week ago. You've got a learning curve ahead of you unless you are experienced. For the brief time your going to be there copy others and ask questions when possible. Drill the bait shop guy good. If he wont talk openly go to another bait shop. While walleye fishing is not difficult knowing where they are can be. Especially on big water. Good luck and have fun, cracker.... haha
Thanks for the info guys! I am an experienced wallye fisherman ( if only in my own mind ). I have fished walleye for many years, particapated in 2 PWT events as an amatuer partner and attended several walleye seminars. With all that said, what I have heard so much about was Northern MN. I am excited to go and will post a fishing report when I return.

I normally stay on Round but think we'll be on Winnie in a week. It's been very dry up there since last fall and the lakes are real low making it hard if not impossible to launch a boat. Couple years back when it was that dry Bowstring wasn't a good bet. Blackduck didn't look feasible last fall either. Winnie being dammed should be fine though. My son lives just outside Squaw Lake so we get weather reports regularly. Unfortunately that insight still hasn't made me a very good fisherman!
