Well....sir.
I would choose lake of the woods. Many people who have taken trips there that I know have all been very satisfied with the fishing there and also tell me that fishing is good most of the year. I do have suggestions for where NOT to go in mid to late July, stay away from canada in the late summer. Seems it gets too warm and well.. the fish just dont seem to like it much. but definately considder it in late spring early summer and fall to early winter.
have fun on your trip wherever you decide to go

Just so you know, Lake of the Woods can offer BIG water to cross to get to the good fishing. On Rainy, you have a maze of Islands and bays to navigate so wind and waves aren't usually a factor. Lake of the Woods has many charter boats to utilize if you aren't comfortable with the big water or if you aren't planning on bringing a boat. Rainy is equally a great fishery. And maybe offers more variety of species and types of walleye fishing.
Have fun!

Actually, Canada in late summer can be awesome! You just need to change your presentations and locations. The fish are eating more in July / August then at any other time of the year. Plus they are schooled on deep structure and easy to locate. Yes, spring and fall are prime time, however don't think that mid to late summer can't be great also. In fact, come August in many Canadien lakes the fish are sensing the end of summer already and will hit just about anything......
