I am considering tying my own flouro leaders...just curious if you guys suggest using a uni-knot for the line to line or a swivel of some sort. Also on the lure end use a swivel or not???? If using swivels what size...using powerpro line on my spinning pfluegers, around 10lb., my baitcasters have 30lb powerpro, for the occassion I might try for a laker or northern on my fly-in...any help appreciated.

How much leader are you using. Some use a barrel swivel. Some use the smallest swivel they can get and reel right through guides. I never liked this idea. I use a uni to uni and it does work.

What kind of lure? If you are attaching to a crankbait use snap only without swivel. Use a Palomar Knot for this.

You do not need an additional leader for crawlwer/minnow harnesses. If you are talking spinners without leader material then your thought process is fine however I would use a good quality snap swivel for this to avoid line twist.

Snap size is always debated here. I like bigger so that crankbaits wobble better. Not good with my memorization of actual sizes. I look and buy.

It is a bit "putzy", but I like to tie a small BALL BEARING barrel swivel about two feet above a snap swivel on all of my trolling rigs. It does two things... 1) if a cralwer harness or carankbait get "fouled" and starts to spin I "usually" do not have a mess up the line by the time I realize it... That twisting anything at the end can make a big mess in a hurry. Using Palomar knots and superglue gives me a solid connection. If I were using superline and then a flouro leader (by your choice) I would move the swivel up to three feet. 2) the other reason is the swivel will catch a fair amount of trash that would normally end up following the line to the snap and thereby affect the action of the lure of the spinner on the harness. Next I use a "cross lock" type of snap, one with a fairly "round" connector at the lure/harness. I don't like the ones that end in a kind of "rounded V"... they sem to affect the action of the lure.

Doesn't the superglue "eat" the leader?

My jigging rods have all have flouro leaders tied on them with the jigs or spoons tied directly to the line. My crank casting rods have flouro leader with crosslock snaps tied to the end of the flouro. I don't use any barrel swivels for connections just uni knots. Rigging rods and bottom bouncer rods have ball bearning snap swivels at the ends so I can attach bouncer/spinners or lindy rigs.

Matt Curious...on your trolling rods where I will use crankbaits how big a crosslock snap do you use??? On my spinning rods where I will use #3 or #2 spinning rigs with grubs and gulp baits would you still use the ball bearing snap swivels and how big???? I think I will use the uni knot for the line to line...have used any of the glue on the knots???

Use "Fishin Glue" does not harm the line at all...

I don't use glue on my knots and have not had one fail yet. I don't know if it makes a difference but I usually wrap six or seven times on each side for a strong knot. As far as size of cross lock, I don't know. It's not the smallest or largest... somewhere right in the middle.

I find # 4 crosslocks work good on my walleye applications.
