I have been fishing the Detroit River for 6 years now and have been basically self taught.....can someone fill me in on the "BURSTING"technique for vertical jigging Thanks.

Don't feel bad; I've been fishing there 30+ years and have never heard that term, either. If I had to guess, it applies to how you run your bowmount motor to maintain a vertical drift. The options are: 1) runnning the motor continuously with just enough power to stay vertical, 2) setting the motor to the maximum power, and only using it in short "bursts" as necessary to correct your drift.

Hopefully, someone who knows what they're talking about will correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm pretty sure Homer has it right. Pulsing your TM to stay over your jig.

No, No, No...it's what happens when you know the next fish you pop at the salt docks is gonna be a 15...so you stay out there a little too long....you've had three too many coffees that morning and all of a sudden you come to the realization you aint gonna make it back to Erie Metro...then the Sheriff pulls along side to check your saftey gear......

Bursting is, as mentioned above, a boat control technique to maintain vertical while vertical jigging. Vertical is very important - especially in the quicker current of the Detroit River - you will feel bottom better, therefore more quickly pick your jig up off bottom and reduce snags.

Bursting just means to turn up your electric motor and quickly get the boat positioned so you are back to vertical. This may or may not be 100%, it's just turned up so you can quickly get back (I know when I ran a Maxxum 101, 100% would have thrown me out of the seat it was so powerful). This technique of staying vertical is also referred to as "following you line". If you line is going off to one side, or under the boat, or in front of the boat, use your trolling motor to quickly follow the line until it is back to vertical.

I thought this was referred to as 'slipping' which is common on rivers. Run your trolling motor pointed upstream and just fast enough that your boat moves downstream at the same speed as your jig so that you maintain a vertical position over your jig.

Are Slipping and Bursting the same thing?

Basically the same thing just two different ways to keep your line vertical. Some people prefer to run constant on trolling motor and adjust speed ,,, others think burst of motor uses less juice and follows line more effectively. I like constant ON, just my preference and what I'm comfortable with.

I agree, bursting is a method used w/ your TM .I prefer bursting on windy days on fronts when the wind changes often. The only time I use continuos is on calm days with low boat traffic, not much. good luck anytime now .

Transom jigging or to my partner I refer to it as "skiing"
