View Full Version : Question fo WAeyes !
Last fall you posted about upper back discomfort while casting and even jigging, well I've got the same thing, and have had it for a good while. I didn't think the replyers to your post really understood what you're going through since it's not a pain but more like a dull ache under your shoulder blade opposite your casting arm. What if anything have you done about it ?

Hey Geno,
This topic makes my back hurt just thinking about it.
You are correct, it is right under the shoulder blade but it is actually on my casting side or right side which is the side that I am holding onto the rod with.
I have not done anything yet for this problem but I have been on absense from fishing for a few months so it has had ample time to rest. Being a "castaholic" like I am I know as soon as I get going again the problem will be back.
I have been thinking about trying a few things different this year to try and relieve the problem.
1. Buying one of those rod balancing kits to take the weight off the end of the rod. When retrieving big cranks agaist current the resistance it creates against your rod is incredible so I am hoping this will help.
2. I am going to make some extra time to go through a pre/post-fishing stretch routine for my back and shoulder muscles.
3. I am thinking about talking to a trainer at the gym where I work out to strengthen those particular muscles to see if that will help.
If none of these things work I will have turn to trolling I guess...NOT!
What have you done or what are you going to try?

I have the same problem. I just went to a chiropractor on Friday. He popped my neck and I've felt good since then. He says I need to come in 3 times a week for a while to get things re-aligned.
I've never gone to a chiropractor before and was a little scheptical about them before; but so far I am impressed.
I was in a very severe car crash several years ago, and suffer the same symtoms since. I realized, after returning to shore and applying heat, the pain almost instantly went away. Then I thought, how 'bout heat WHILE I'm fishing. So I taped on those little packs that last several hours on the key areas of my shoulder blades/back. WOW! No more pain! I had to put a light cloth between the heat pad and the skin. You buy these things in any sporting goods section of the chain discount stores. "Heat Factory" is the brand I have.
Hey marketing dept....wanna sponsor me? lol
Of course, this might only apply to my case and not yours. But it is worth a buck to see, I think.

S.F., I hear ya on the back rub while your fishing. Problem is my buddies are having a hard time getting in touch with their feminine side so they won't do it! LOL. Heat does help. I have one of those heat and massage cushions that you hook up to the cigarrette lighter in the truck. Feels great but I have to stop fishing to enjoy it. I do use it on my way fishing and on the way back from fishing though.
Guys,
I've done nothing except read the mag's and catalogs, just got some dumbells and thinking about some light weight training. Threw some cranks out on my pond today and same thing, had to quit. There's got to be something to this, but I'll be #### if I know what it is. I can't stand to put the rod down, but that's what I have to do, take a rest and go again for awhile. I'll give you an update if it's of any value. Hang in there ! And for sure, let me know how all you chaps are doing !

I wonder? Would the Wristsaver rod make a difference?
#49
Steve....Wristsaver might work but before I give up these Loomis' I'm 'gonna fool with these weights and try those heat packs. If it's muscle spasm the heat might do the trick. If not, it looks like I'll have to keep a dead stick handy. Thanks for everyones help, I'll let you know.

Hey Vern,
What was the medical diagnosis of that?

I have the same problem as explained earlier. I don't know if it is how I am holding my rod or how I cast. Have had this for 4 years or so. Only 23 right now. Guess I have a lifetime to deal with it unless someone knows how to cure it.
