What would be the best light for night fishing for pan fish and how is the best way to use it?

I'm just a "copy-cat"...But years ago I saw a guy's boat rigged with those metal guarded amber truck clearance lights on the sides...mounted about 10" down from the gunwale on the outside...I put some on my boat and have loved them for night fishing ever since...I'm doing it to the new boat...

I use a clamp-on heat type lamp with a twelve volt bulb that looks like a normal household bulb. You can get them at Walmart or any RV supplier. I cut the 110 plug off and put on either alligator clips or a cigarette lighter plug. About twelve dollars for everything at Walmart. You can take them off when you don't need them, move them about your boat in different places and I have even navigated by them before at night when I left my spotlight at home. Work great for walleyes, crappies and such. Only drawback is that being on the side of the boat and facing down, they also attract a lot of bugs. I try and use mine on the nights when there's enough breeze to keep the bugs away. I just clamp the lights to the gunnels and let it shine down towards the water. Then I generally use a slip bobber rig on the outskirts of the light pattern. These are for external, dry use. Do not dunk them into the water and like any lightbulb, they produce heat so be careful. Have never used the floating lights so I don't know how they work. Good luck. Blaze.
